Lapis Satricanus

The Lapis Satricanus , or “ Stone of Satricum ”, is a yellow stone with an inscription, which was found in the ruins of the ancient Satricum , today Le Ferriere, district of Latina ( 41 ° 31 ′  N , 12 ° 45 ′  E ) in 1977 by Conrad M Stibbe was found. It was reused there in the foundation of a temple for Mater Matuta . It is found in the late 6th to early 5th centuries BC. Dated.

His inscription reads:

(?) IEI STETERAI POPLIOSIO VALESIOSIO SVODALES MAMARTEI

This can be translated as: "The (?) Dedicated this, as a companion of Publius Valerius, to Mars ."

With “Popliosio Valesiosios” the Roman senator Publius Valerius Poplicola is probably meant.

The inscription is written in spring Latin or a dialect similar to it. It is important for the Indo-European language comparison, as it is the only Latin evidence for the genitive ending "-osio" of the thematic noun inflection. The later Latin has "î" as the ending of this case. However, a comparison with other ancient Italian languages , with Greek and Sanskrit, shows that the original ending was -osio .
