Rudolf Wachter (philologist)
Rudolf Wachter (born November 29, 1954 in Winterthur ) is a Swiss linguist and classical philologist .
Life
Wachter studied Classical Philology at the University of Zurich (lic. Phil 1981, Dr. phil. 1987) and at the University of Oxford (D. Phil. 1991). From 1991 to 1997 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Basel , where he also received his habilitation in 1996 .
Since 1997 he has been an associate professor for "Greek and Latin Linguistics with Special Consideration of Indo-European Aspects" at the University of Basel. At the same time, he taught at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) from 1990 to 2006 , first as a lecturer, from 1997 as a visiting professor, and since 2006 he has been "Professeur associé de linguistique historique indo-européenne" at the University of Lausanne . Since 2007 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .
His main research interests are Greek and Latin linguistics, philology and epigraphy , historical-comparative (Indo-European) linguistics as well as the history of the alphabet and writing technique (especially in ancient times). In this role he was a consultant for the Basel Homer Commentary, among others .
