history

Early settlement history

The earliest traces of human settlement in Angelmodde come from the Mesolithic . The extensive find of an urn cemetery on the border with Gremmendorf is of Bronze Age origin. The oldest cultivated land, which indicates permanent settlement, dates back to around 800 BC. At the edges of long-striped fields, buildings were built on small elevations, including what would later become the Borgmann, Althoff and Homann farms. Towards the end of the 9th century, the Münster church property was divided between the bishop and the cathedral chapter . Here, the Bishop received the fief to house Lütke Beck , while the farms in Angelmodder area fell to the cathedral chapter.

A few more farms were built up until the late Middle Ages . The older, meanwhile large courtyards were divided: This created the so-called Zwiehöfe, such as Althoff (old courtyard) and Niehoff (new courtyard).

Between 1042 and 1063 the Münster canon Nithung came into possession of these goods. He had a clay castle built in the Werseschleife near Angelmodde, from which the Hofschulte farm later developed. Presumably Nithung also donated the Church of St. Agatha, as St. Agatha was probably the patroness of the family.

Developments since the 20th century

Angelmodde was a small settlement until the first half of the 20th century. Between 1938 and 1940, the building contractor Peter Büscher built around 20 houses for his workers, thereby creating the Peter Büscher estate . In the 1950s many new houses were built, especially for the British soldiers ; In the course of this, churches such as the Friedenskirche , the St. Bernhard Church and schools such as the Annette School and later the Osthuesheide elementary school were established . Angelmodde's growth was so rapid that it temporarily became the fastest growing community in the country. The 1960s settlement on Schlesienstrasse has now even got monument status .
