The Catholic Basilica of the Holy Cross (Polish: Bazylika Świętego Krzyża ) in Warsaw is a Catholic basilica in the Kraków suburb at its southern end and transition to the New World .
history
The church was mentioned for the first time in 1510. In 1525 the church was expanded by Martha Möller, a merchant widow. And rebuilt again in 1615. The parish was founded in 1625 and the church was consecrated as a parish church. In the 17th century it was taken over by the Lazarists . In the second half of the 17th century it received its mature Baroque style after being expanded by Simone Giuseppe Belotti . The towers go back to Giacomo Giuseppe Fontana , the facade to his son Giacomo Fontana and the baroque figures to Johann Georg Plersch . In 1814 Józef Antoni Poniatowski was buried in the church before his body was transferred to the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow in 1817 . Frédéric Chopin's heart was also buried in the church. The church burned down in the first days of the Second World War after being bombed by the Air Force and was blown up by the Wehrmacht on September 6, 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising . The reconstruction took place in the years 1945 to 1953. The church was raised in 2002 to the rank of a minor basilica .
