It connects the remote old town with the city center . The street begins at Palace Square , where the Kraków Gate, which was demolished in the 19th century, was located. It runs south parallel to the Vistula , above a steep embankment . The most beautiful churches and palaces in Warsaw as well as the old university campus and the art academy are located along the wide street . The Saxon axis runs across the Kraków suburb .

The reconstruction after 1945 equalized the building heights of the houses and simplified the ornamentation of the facades. 2006-2008 the street was thoroughly modernized, it received widened sidewalks and a narrow carriageway made of Chinese granite slabs. Only bus and taxi traffic is permitted.

Together with Nowy Świat and Aleje Ujazdowskie streets , it forms the Royal Route .
