The Holy Cross Chapel or Gnadenkapelle is located on the Han ("Hain") above Blieskastel in Saarland . As a place of pilgrimage, it belongs to the Blieskastel Monastery ( Minorite Monastery ) built in 1929 and is visited by around 80,000 pilgrims every year. The chapel was built as a place of worship for a cross relic, but today it is closely related to the 14th century Pietà " Our Lady with the Arrows ". In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the chapel is a single monument in the ensemble monastery "On the Han" listed.

history

The chapel, which replaced a smaller previous building, was probably built between 1682 and 1683 according to plans by the builder Thomas Gampfer or Camper. The building supervision was incumbent on bailiff Johann Simon Rosinus.

The builders were barons Carl Caspar and Damian Adolph von der Leyen , who had relocated their residence from Blieskastel to Koblenz a few years earlier . According to the dedication inscription, the church was supposed to " serve to increase the implantation of Christian-Catholic devotions among subjects" . The chapel had a cross relic , to which pilgrimages took place and which is also the namesake of the chapel. Long before the “Arrow Madonna”, originally from the Gräfinthal monastery , came here, the Holy Cross Chapel was already a regionally significant place of pilgrimage. The priest and royal visitor Carl Desiderius de Royer , reorganizer of Catholic life in the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , published a booklet on this pilgrimage on the cross in 1692.

In the course of the French Revolution , the church was profaned in 1793 and the pilgrimage came to a standstill. The new owners used it as a guard room and powder magazine for a time. In 1804 the chapel was rededicated and services were held regularly again. In 1829 the famous miraculous image “Our Lady with the Arrows” came here, but it was forgotten.

In 1913, the pilgrimage was revived, but now referred to the rediscovered and newly restored Arrows Madonna. Since then, the little church has been one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in the responsible diocese of Speyer .

In 1958 the first restoration took place, during which the ribbed vault was found, which was exposed in the years 1965–66 and painted in its original colors. The roof was restored in 2008-09, and further construction work was urgently required.

The Capuchins who worked here until 2005 were replaced by the Franciscan Minorites, who are tenants in the monastery complex after establishing a monastery foundation. The Catholic Cross Chapel Association, founded in December 2007 and recognized as a non-profit organization, takes care of the building's condition .

The interior renovation of the chapel began on May 16, 2013 . The solemn re-commissioning of the chapel, which was carried out by Speyr's auxiliary bishop Otto Georgens , took place on December 1, 2013.

organ

In a corner next to the entrance is the organ of the chapel, which was built in 1972 by the organ building company Hugo Mayer ( Heusweiler ). The instrument has 5 registers. The wind chests are mechanical slide chests. It has a free-standing gaming table .
