Hugo Mayer organ building
The Hugo Mayer Orgelbau company in Heusweiler , Saarland , is the third generation to build organs. She also specializes in restoring old organs.
history
The workshop was founded in 1952 by Hugo Mayer (* 1912, † 1980) in Brebach and relocated to larger rooms in Heusweiler in 1957.
After three years of apprenticeship (1927–1930), the military and military service interrupted Hugo Mayer's training hike across Europe. After returning from Soviet captivity , he was able to take his master's examination in 1948 and in the same year became operations manager at EF Walcker , the largest organ building company in Germany at the time. After four years he went into business for himself.
Son Gerd Mayer joined his father's workshop as a trainee in 1957 . After his journeyman's examination , he worked in France and America, among other places, and in 1966, the youngest German organ builder, passed the master's examination at the Chamber of Crafts in Stuttgart . In 1974 he took over the management from his father. Gerd Mayer was awarded the title of restorer in organ building by the Stuttgart Chamber of Crafts in May 2001 .
In 1989, Stephan Mayer became the third generation. He began his training, as is often seen in the craft, outside of his father's workshop, which he joined in 1992 after completing his apprenticeship. Stephan Mayer is trained in CAD and brought this modern design technique to the company. In 1996 he passed his master craftsman's examination in Stuttgart and has since headed the new construction department of the company, which is still run by his father.
Eleven organ builders work in the company today, including two master organ builders, as well as the senior manager, two organ builders and an assistant to the management.
Development of the instruments
Since the company was founded in 1952, the organs have continued to develop both optically and sonically. The first instruments, which were still manufactured in Brebach at the time, were almost exclusively provided with electro-pneumatic cone chests and free pipe brochures made of zinc. Only small instruments, such as those for the Köllerbach Meeting Church or the Breitfurt Protestant Church, have already been fitted with mechanical sliders. Another characteristic of Mayer organs from the 1950s is the designation Dulzean instead of Dulzian for the same reed register, which is often found in the swell or ancillary works.
At the beginning of the 1960s, there was a consistent switch to slider chests. While smaller instruments already had a mechanical action mechanism, the larger instruments were still equipped with fully electric action mechanisms. In the brochures, bright copper pipes and closed, mostly box-shaped housings can be found as typical design features. Towards the end of the decade, with the construction of the new organ for St. Michael in Homburg (1968), a larger three-manual instrument was equipped with a mechanical action mechanism for the first time.
In the 1970s, some typical and recurring prospectus forms emerged. Copper pipes have now been completely dispensed with. Many brochures showed the main work in the middle of their work structure, including an often swellable positive flanked by two pedal towers. But there were also quite a few asymmetrical prospectuses (e.g. Namedy, Braubach or Vallendar). The dispositions were quite steep and colorful, in accordance with the sense of style at the time.
Brochures with slightly pointed pipe towers were typical of the 1980s. In addition, copper pipes were once again used as a design feature, however not made of light-colored copper, as in the 1960s, but of flamed copper (e.g. Heusweiler, Saarbrücken St. Paulus). The veil boards show some characteristic patterns that can be found on many Mayer organs from this period. In addition, coupling manuals were not infrequently built in the mid-1980s. With the entry of the voicer Patrick Akroud in 1984, new paths were also broken in terms of intonation. Representative instruments were made in Lisdorf, Lebach and Wiesbaden (St. Bonifatius).
This development continued through the 90s and early 2000s, with some symphonic instruments such as the Schmelz-Außen or the new choir organ of the Basilica St. Johann Saarbrücken. With the construction of the new organ for the Evangelical Church in Riegelsberg in 2002, the brochure designs were modern and colored applications were introduced. The large concert organ of the National Academy of Music in Astana is stained a bright red. With the instruments in Obersalbach (2008) and in the Langwiedstift Saarbrücken (2015), unconventional disposition concepts based on the multiplex principle were also implemented.
Furthermore, compared to other organ building companies, it is unusual that the Mayer company has consistently built individual instruments with fully electric action mechanisms since it was founded (see list of works).
