The St. Wilfridus Church is a Catholic church in Kastel , a district of the municipality of Nonnweiler in the St. Wendel district , Saarland . It is the only church in the German-speaking region to have the patronage of St. Wilfrid of York . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The first written mention of a church in Kastel dates back to 1276. In this document, Pope Innocent V of Tholey Abbey confirmed the Kastel parish .

The origin of the first church at today's location was a 12-meter-high defense tower built around 1185 , behind which a church was built in 1317. Written evidence of the existence of this church is the Taxa generalis from 1330, a directory of the ecclesiastical property (monasteries, churches, etc.) of the Archdiocese of Trier , which lists a church in Kastel.

In the following centuries the church was rebuilt several times, whereby the tower was always preserved. The first two churches were probably wooden churches that were attached to the tower. The third church was built in the 15th century and, like the two previous churches, was built behind the tower. It survived the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), but was in a dilapidated condition by the beginning of the 1760s at the latest , and from 1771 onwards it was no longer allowed to be used for church services. The demolition took place in 1777.

The current church building, the fourth church building on this site, was built in 1777 according to plans by the building council of the Duke of Lorraine , the architect Nicolas Robin. Since the building contractor responsible for the construction had to file for bankruptcy, the pastor of Kastel at the time, Peter Leonhardt, was the surety for the construction costs.

In 1908 the church tower got its present appearance when a neo-baroque , slate-roofed dome with a lantern was placed on top of the medieval tower .

Architecture and equipment

The church in Kastel is a baroque hall church with three window axes . It is divided into four components, consisting of a single nave , the adjoining three-sided, polygonal choir , a sacristy attached to the choir , and the church tower with a Welscher dome on the side of the nave. In the west facade of the nave is the main entrance portal, consisting of a two-door entrance gate and a skylight above , with the doors suspended in a round arch portal . Another portal is on the ground floor of the tower.

The interior of the church includes numerous figures of saints , including a figure of St. Agatha, which is believed to date from the 16th century. There are two figures of the church patron Wilfrid von York, one in the choir and another in the nave. Further items of equipment are an Immaculata from 1802 and a Pietà from 1858. The doors to the sacristy and the tower from 1783, which still have the original fittings, are also worth mentioning. On the inner sides of these fittings baroque rosettes are as wooden reliefs used that Peter on the Mount of Olives ( Mt 26.36 to 56  EU ; Mk 14.32 to 52  EU ; Lk 22.39 to 46  EU ) and Paul before Damascus ( ActsEU ) represent.

organ

The church organ was built in 1996 by Hugo Mayer ( Heusweiler ). The abrasive loading -instrument is on a loft positioned and has 16 registers , spread over 2 manuals and pedal . The playing and stop action is mechanical.

The predecessor of the Mayer organ, which also had 16 stops, came from the company Späth ( Mengen ) and was built in 1926 as Opus 325. The organ, a cone store instrument with electro-pneumatic playing and stop action, was set up in the attic of the church, while the console was on the gallery. The sound entered the church through sound openings. All pedal pipes of today's Mayer organ still come from the Späth organ.
