The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a Catholic parish church in Nunkirchen in Saarland , a district of Wadern in the Merzig-Wadern district . She bears the patronage of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus . The church is one of the few churches in Saarland whose furnishings have largely retained the original character from the time it was built. In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

The first documentary mention of a church in Nunkirchen dates from the year 918, although the indication of the year is not certain. The first secure designation of Nunkirchen as a parish is recorded in a document from 1148.
Between 1730 and 1732 a new church was built, which bore the patronage of St. Sebastian . In 1741 an archway was built from the rectory to the church and in 1789 the church was expanded. A lightning strike damaged the tower in 1831 .

After the 18th century church was demolished, today's church building was erected on the same site from 1894 to 1896 based on plans by the architect Reinhold Wirtz ( Trier ). During the construction of the church, an emergency church was also set up.
The foundation stone was laid on July 10, 1894. On April 25, 1896, the finished church was consecrated by the Trier auxiliary bishop Karl Ernst Schrod .

In 1953, the interior of the church was restored . a. a new painting took place. During a further restoration measure in the interior, old wall paintings were painted over with white emulsion paint in 1962 , but have since been restored as far as possible. In 1969 the archway built in 1741 was torn down. In 1974 renovations took place u. a. at the chancel and side entrances to the side of the main portal . In 1981 the west facade, church roof and tower were restored. In 1995 the lead glass windows were restored by the Binsfeld company (Trier). Between 2004 and 2005 the company Mrziglod-Leiss ( Tholey ) carried out an extensive interior restoration, during which the original painting was restored. The solemn reopening of the church after the restoration took place in the presence of the then Trier Bishop Reinhard Marx .
Under the direction of architect Siegbert Barth ( Waldhölzbach ) 2008 and 2009 tower and were spire restored and the weathercock and the hands of the clock tower gold .

Church building

The church building was built as a three-nave hall church in the neo-Gothic style. It is a so-called step hall or pseudo basilica , the exterior of which gives a basilical impression. In contrast to a basilica, there is no window zone between the central nave and the lower aisles , a so-called upper aisle . Rather, the separate aisle roofs end directly under the eaves of the central or main nave.

The exterior is divided into the west tower, visible from afar, the three-aisled nave , the polygonal transept with side choirs and the five-sided polygonal final choir in the east.
The polygonal endings of the choir and transept create a so - called
three - icon complex , which has a clover-leaf shape in plan . The church thus represents a combination of the Rhenish- Romanesque type of three-corner complex with the neo-Gothic stepped hall.

Furnishing

View inside the church
High altar

The high altar in the style of a Gothic winged altar ( triptych ), the two side altars and the pulpit date from the time the church was built . The side parts of the triptych are folded over the middle part during Advent and Lent , which means that the former church patron, St. Barbara on the left and St. Sebastian on the right, becomes visible on the side walls of the altar. The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah can be seen on the left and Ezekiel and Daniel on the right . Outside of Advent and Lent, the side wings are open so that the two central parts with the representation of the wonderful multiplication of the bread and of Jesus at the last supper can be seen. On the side wings, the four great late antique church doctors of the West can be seen at this time : Jerome and Gregory the Great on the left and Ambrosius and Augustine on the right.
The left side altar, the Marian altar , represents the presentation of the rosary to St. Dominic . The portrait is flanked by figures of St. Aloisius and St. Francis . The Joseph altar shows the Holy Family , flanked by St. Anna and St. Joachim , the parents of Mary .
The pulpit bears reliefs of the four evangelists Matthew , Mark , Luke and John .
The reredos of the three altars and the pulpit are made of oak and were delivered on July 10, 1899 by the Karl Dörr company ( Saulgau / Allgäu ).
The Arnold Schüller company (Trier) created the font and delivered it on June 16, 1898.

The terracotta-colored tapestry in the chancel with pictures from creation , the world of fables and native animals as well as the figure depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the figures of Saints Sebastian, Stephanus , Katharina , Barbara and Antonius of Padua also come from the time of construction .

The lead-glazed pointed arched windows also date from the time of construction and show brightly colored representations of Jesus and some saints, Jesus, the divine child friend, Jesus, the good shepherd, as well as Saint Sebastian and Barbara. The central choir window shows the revelation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to Saint Margaret Maria Alacoque . In 1995 all windows were restored by the Binsfeld company (Trier).

Further items of equipment are twelve Apostolic candlesticks from 1953, which are attached to the places where the anointing by the bishop took place during the consecration . The furnishings also include a Way of the Cross from 1907, which, like a Sacred Heart statue from 1925 to 1930, was restored in 2006 by the Mrziglod-Leiss (Tholey) company. In 2005, Mrziglod-Leiss was also responsible for painting the interior of the church. The original paintings and all of the interior furnishings were restored in the neo-Gothic style. As part of the restoration work, it was possible to restore 28 painted memorial plaques with the names of those who died in the First World War , which had been painted over.
The old floor tiles that were destroyed in the
chancel were faithfully reproduced by Villeroy & Boch and relocated.

organ

Gallery and organ prospect

In July 1902 the church received an organ from the company H. Voit & Söhne ( Durlach ), which was built in the style of the romantic organ era and equipped with the latest pneumatic system at the time. It had 26 sounding registers and 10 secondary registers. During the First World War, 43 organ pipes weighing 173 kg were confiscated by the Reich Military Treasury in 1917 and removed by Voit & Sons, who, however, re-manufactured and installed the pipes in 1920.

In 1980 the instrument was renewed by Hugo Mayer Orgelbau ( Heusweiler ) using most of the pipe work of the Voit organ from 1902. Only seven new registers were installed, and the case of the Voit organ was almost completely taken over. The new plant has a total of 2032 pipes, among which there are around 240 wooden pipes. Inaugurated the new organ on 18 May 1980. was
