Old Antonius Church

In 1899/1900 dean Ferdinand Meurin had the first Lützel Antonius Church built, a three-aisled building in neo-Romanesque style. It stood at the southern foot of the Petersberg in the street “An der Ringmauer” ( 50 ° 22 ′ 4 ″  N , 7 ° 35 ′ 18 ″  E ) in the upper area of the Koblenz district of Lützel. Originally the church belonged to the parish of Liebfrauen until an independent parish was founded in Lützel in 1911 .

In 1925, two bells handed in during the First World War were replaced. At the same time an organ built by Johannes Klais Orgelbau from Bonn was consecrated . A moving turning point for the parish in Lützel was the bridge disaster of 1930 , which occurred after the end of the national Rhineland liberation ceremony in Lützel and in which many parishioners were killed.

During the Second World War , the Antoniuskirche was badly damaged in the air raids on Koblenz in 1944. After the war, the service took place in Notkirchen . As these became too small over time, the parish of St. Peter in Neuendorf left the Maria-Hilf chapel and the property belonging to it to the parish in Lützel. Although the Antonius Church could still be rebuilt, those responsible under Pastor Peter Plein decided to build a new one, as the old church was no longer sufficient for the community even before the war and an extension to either side was not possible.

A pilgrimage church was built next to the Maria Hilf chapel in 1952/1953. The parish initially kept the name St. Antonius until a new parish church was built in Lützel. After that, the newly founded parish of the pilgrimage church was given the name Maria Hilf. The ruins of the old Antonius Church were blown up on December 5, 1953 and then removed. The rectory to the west of the church was demolished in the early 1970s when the Europabrücke was widened , as it received a two-lane turn to Metternich at the level of the rectory .

New building 1968–1969

After the construction of the parish and pilgrimage church Maria Hilf, Pastor Peter Plein endeavored to build a parish church in the lower part of Lützel as well. In 1966 another parish was founded, which was named St. Antonius. Until the construction of the new parish church St. Antonius in the years 1968 to 1969 in Brenderweg, the service took place in a short-term emergency church next to the building site. The architect of the new church was Hanns Schönecker from St. Ingbert. The foundation stone was laid on May 5, 1968, the consecration took place on June 15, 1969. The statue of St. Anthony, which had stood in the old Antonius Church, was moved to the new church building. It is the work of the sculptor Wilhelm Tophinke .

Parish community

Since February 1st, 2011, St. Antonius has formed a parish community with Maria Hilf in Lützel, St. Peter in Neuendorf and St. Martin in Kesselheim .
