The parish church of St. Martin is a Catholic church in Koblenz . The parish church in the Kesselheim district was built in 1933, including the tower from the 12th century. It bears the patronage of St. Martin of Tours .

history

After the Kesselheim royal estate was donated to Aachen Abbey , a chapel was built on the hill directly on the Rhine in the 9th century. Over time, a church building emerged from this, which was first mentioned in 1174 and to which the tower from the 12th century still preserved today bears witness. This church was renewed in 1787 because the old building was badly damaged. The chapel of Schönbornslust Palace was used during the construction work . The benediction of the new church took place on September 14, 1787 under Pastor Schäfer. This church building was a single nave, closed in three sides of the octagon with a flat wooden ceiling. It was restored in 1856, 1893 and 1907.

At the beginning of the 20th century it was decided to build a new building. The foundation stone for a church building was laid on June 11, 1933, which was estimated to cost 65,000 Reichsmarks (€ 298,530). It was planned by the architects Huch & Grefges from Koblenz. The old building was torn down, the medieval tower was integrated into the new building and plastered again. The new St. Martin Church received the benediction on November 19, 1933, the consecration took place on June 21, 1934 by the Trier Bishop Franz Rudolf Bornewasser . The last interior renovation took place in 2012.

Construction and equipment

Outside

The parish church of St. Martin is an expressionist - Gothic hall building with a side aisle . The Romanesque tower on a square floor plan consists of quarry stone masonry . It is not structured except for the coupled sound openings , which are equipped with cube capitals and simple fighters . It tapers steadily towards the top. Placed him is a broken spire of slate .

The medieval church building was easted . The new building is aligned along Schöffengasse and so the tower is at an angle of 45 degrees to the church. This targeted asymmetry can be found in the design of the nave. The two-aisled building with a lower aisle on the tower side has a smooth triangular gable with inclines of unequal length at the front . Below is a monumental pointed arched step portal with a small rectangular door on the left that leads to the aisle. Because of the sloping terrain towards the Rhine, there is a basement level accessible from the bank under the rectangular choir that is just closing .

In front of the church there is a war memorial made of light-colored limestone , which commemorates the fallen of the two world wars from Kesselheim. It is shaped like an aedicle with free-standing fluted columns. In the middle there is a small pietà .

Inside

The interior has a pointed arched and burr-shaped concrete vault , into which high stitch caps cut on both sides . There are lancet windows on the south wall, on the north side one reaches the lower aisle with flat beamed ceiling through squat, pointed arcades . Since the tower and the sacristy are at both ends , the aisle is shorter than the main nave. The stained glass windows from the time it was built were made by the Binsfeld glass workshop in Trier based on a design by Ludwig Preckel from Cologne . The choir, raised by a few steps, with a triumphal arch-shaped wall is set off like a stage .

In the church there are some figures of saints from the 18th century and a chalice-shaped baptismal font made of basalt , marked 1659, with a younger high brass lid.

In the Romanesque tower of the parish church of St. Martin hang three bells , which belong to the oldest ring in the city of Koblenz.
