Location of Eich in Rhineland-Palatinate

Eich is a district and one of the four districts of the city of Andernach in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in northern Rhineland-Palatinate . Eich was an independent municipality until November 7, 1970.

Geographical location

The village of Eich is about five kilometers from the city center. In the district of Eich there is also the so-called Krayer Hof , a well-preserved castle-like complex, the core of which is likely to date from the late Middle Ages .

history

As early as 1026, a church of St. Remigius in "Eichin" is mentioned in the register of the Kastor monastery in Koblenz , which may have been the castle chapel of the Knights of Eich.

Since 1699 there has been an annual pilgrimage to the pilgrimage site of St. Sebastian am Rhein, 18 km away . According to tradition, the citizens of Eich vowed an annual pilgrimage if they were spared the raging plague at the time . When returning from the first pilgrimage, the last person who died of the plague was said to have been buried.

The existing church evidently had considerable structural defects and in 1748 it was called a "damp hole" by the pastor at the time. In 1750, a new church was built in Eich and once again St. Consecrated to Catherine. At that time the village had about 300 inhabitants.

At the end of the 19th century the population rose to around 800. A new parish church was therefore built between 1894 and 1897. This was again in the same place but had to be built across the previous buildings due to its size. The foundation walls of the church partly still rest on the remains of the former buildings, some of which are said to go back to a possible former Eicher knight's castle (between 1100 and 1400). The church was consecrated on May 26th by the then Bishop of Trier Michael Felix Korum in the name of the Birth of Mary. Parish fair is celebrated on September 8th, the church festival “The Birth of Mary”.

In the course of the administrative reform, the previously independent municipality of Eich, with 1,424 inhabitants at the time, was incorporated into the city of Andernach on November 7, 1970 .

coat of arms

The former municipality of Eich had a coat of arms.

Blazon : “In silver on a red three-hill, a green, stylized, symmetrical oak tree with four horizontal branches and five oak leaves, one each at the branch ends and one at the upper fork. The helmet cover is green and silver. "
Justification for the coat of arms: The red Dreiberg symbolizes the landmark of Eich, the extinct volcano Nastberg, the stylized oak indicates the coat of arms of the knight Peter von Eich and is similar to the coat of arms of the knights von Gramann zu Nickenich. The knights of Eich were lords of Olbrück in 1269 and 1271–1469.

politics

District

A local district has been created for the Eich district. The district of Eich comprises the area of the former municipality of Eich. In addition, the main statutes provide for local heads and deputy local heads for the local district.

Economy and Infrastructure

Up until the middle of the 20th century, agriculture was the determining element in Eich, even though basalt lava was mined in the area around the volcano Nastberg as early as the 18th century and was used as building material for the fortress buildings in Koblenz. After the Second World War , pumice was mined in the surrounding area . Today there are only three full-time farmers left in Eich. There are also some medium-sized companies and handicraft businesses (including two construction companies, heating construction) as well as some smaller service companies. From the previous 8 restaurants there are now only two, a town hall and a bar. But there was another place for hikers (which is a log cabin).

education

In Eich there is a primary school with a day care center (municipal day care center "Am Nastberg-Eich"), a day care center (St. Marien Eich kindergarten) and a branch of the Andernach youth center. Secondary schools are located in the core city of Andernach.

Tourism and sightseeing

In the center of the village rises the Catholic parish church of the Birth of Mary , built from 1894 to 1897 in neo -Gothic style , under the direction of the Lüftelberg- born architect Anton Becker (1853–1899) . It contains u. a. six carved saints by the Mayen artist Heinrich Alken (1753–1827).

Between the actual site calibration and Krayer Hof is an old cemetery of the Mennonites .

The Nastberg volcano and the large excavation pit for basalt lava are integrated into the volcanic park operated by VULKANPARK GmbH in the Mayen-Koblenz district as an information and hiking trail . In addition to a lot of information about volcanism in the Eifel (and in the Middle Rhine region bordering it , in which the Nastberg is located), an ascent to the summit cross offers a unique view of Eich, the Pellenz and the Neuwied basin .
