history
The castle was built in the 11th century by Lambert von Lützing, in 1336 it was owned by Kurköln , then owned by various nobles. In 1813 the Andernach leather manufacturer Nebel bought the castle, which was then acquired in 1827 by Matthias Hölterhof from Cologne.
In the years 1901/02 the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire lived temporarily as a private tutor at Kray Castle.
The castle has been owned by the Anton Elvert family since 1953. The name Elvert comes from the old French Huguenot age (elle verde; the green). The family was relocated from the Münsterland; more precisely from Hiddingsel. Due to the straightening of the Dortmund Ems Canal, the old farm had to give way. The name Elvert gave the farmers their name there.
