Rage (English rage [ ɹeɪdʒ ] "anger") is a German power metal - band from Herne in North Rhine-Westphalia , which has existed since the 1984th

Members

Peter “Peavy” Wagner (singer and bassist) is the only remaining founding member. Since June 2015 Vassilios "Lucky" Maniatopoulos (drums) is there. The band's three-man formation, which has been typical for many years, became a four-man line-up again in June 2020 with the entry of the two guitarists Stefan Weber and Jean Bormann, as was the last case from the formation to 1999.

history

The band was founded in 1984 by ex- Steeler drummer Jan Yildiral, Jochen Schroeder and Alf Meyerratken under the name Avenger . After Jan Yildiral left, Jörg Michael joined the band as drummer and Peter “Peavy” Wagner as singer and bass player. In 1986 the group had to be renamed because there was already a band of the same name in Great Britain . Actually, Furious Rage was chosen as the new band name, but the new record company Noise Records deleted the word "furious" from the band name in the course of the release of the 1986 album Reign of Fear . The band name Rage has remained since then.

After their national breakthrough with their 1988 album Perfect Man , the band succeeded in 1992 with the album Trapped! also the international breakthrough - especially in Japan, where Rage went on tour for the first time in the same year.

After the band had already experimented with classical elements in individual songs , a classical project became a surprising success in 1996: the band recorded an album with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, which was released under the title Lingua Mortis and was the first Classic metal crossover by a German band applies. Based on this and with the support of the BMG label GUN Records , further orchestrated albums ( XIII and Ghosts ) followed in the second half of the 1990s , several appearances as well as an entire tour with orchestra and a nearly two-hour gig at the Rockpalast in 1998.

While working on the 1999 album Ghosts , bandleader Wagner was confronted with the sudden departure of Sven Fischer and the Efthimiadis brothers Spiros and Christos, as did the arranger and keyboardist Christian Wolff, who was an unofficial member of the band at the time. These four gave birth to the alternative rock band Sub7even . Wagner first brought the hitherto almost unknown Victor Smolski into the band, who completed Ghosts with his guitar tracks , and returned to the classic three-man line-up of the early 1990s with the engagement of drummer Mike Terrana .

In 2001 took Rage once again at a large audience attracted attention as that of Victor Smolski composed song Straight to Hell from the album Welcome to the Other Side as a soundtrack for the film Dance of the Vampires by Michael Herbig was selected to the To underline the key scene in which Sky du Mont appears as the villain Santa Maria for the first time. This metal riff could also be heard in Herbig's next film (T) Raumschiff Surprise - Period 1 in 2004 and has since been used several times by Stefan Raab as a sound backdrop at Wok World Championships or stock car races .

Rage celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2004. On this occasion, a two-hour concert with songs from all epochs of the band's history was recorded in January 2004 in the Bochum mine , which was recorded in November 2004 as a double live CD / DVD by the German record label SPV under the title From the Cradle to the Stage has been published. After another move to the record label Nuclear Blast , the band picked up on classical music again in the album Speak of the Dead (2006) and resumed the orchestral period in the band's history with the over 20-minute suite Lingua Mortis . Thanks to good relationships with Victor Smolski, the classical parts were recorded by the Belarusian symphony orchestra of the city of Minsk .

In December 2006, Rage announced the departure of Mike Terrana, who switched to Masterplan . According to the report on the band's homepage, the reason for this was that personal and musical interests had diverged too widely. Terrana was replaced on January 1, 2007 by André Hilgers from Axxis . In 2008 the album Carved in Stone was released . After Rage was a total guest on the TV show TV at the beginning of 2008 , the members represented the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at the Bundesvision Song Contest in February 2009 , where they were never able to come in 3rd place with the song Gib dich never . In February 2010 the album Strings to a Web was released . Two years later, on February 24, 2012, album 21 was released, which is the band's 21st album.

In 2013 the members founded the orchestral project Lingua Mortis Orchestra and released the debut album LMO on August 2, 2013 . It is a concept album and deals with the witch hunt in Gelnhausen , in particular the story of Elisabeth Strupp's suffering .

In a press release on February 4, 2015, the band announced that Victor Smolski and André Hilgers were leaving the band. The reason given is “musical and personal changes”. Smolski will continue the Lingua Mortis Orchestra , but under a new name and without Peavy. In the meantime, he and his former Rage colleagues Manni Schmidt and Christos Efthimiadis founded the band Refuge , which will play Rage song material from the corresponding period (1987-1993) as a live band.

Rage itself was continued in parallel by Peavy together with Marcos Rodriguez and Vassilios "Lucky" Maniatopoulos. Both have been Rage fans themselves since childhood and were personally invited to join the band by Peavy. Both were officially presented in June 2015. Rodriguez was already on tour in 2014 with his band Soundchaser as opening act for Rage. Maniatopoulos is also active as a singer at Tri State Corner , where his former mentor and former rage drummer Christos Efthimiadis is also a member. The first live appearance in the new formation took place on November 14th at the Metal Hammer Paradise 2015 in the Weißenhäuser Strand holiday park . The first release of the new line-up was the EP My Way in January 2016, the album The Devil Strikes Again was released on June 10, 2016. The work of this line-up section was supplemented by album releases in 2017 ( Seasons of the Black ) and February 2020 ( Wings of Rage ). The track HTTS 2.0 features a new recording of the live encores classic Higher than the Sky on this album .

With the release of a new recording of The Price of War on June 12, 2020 (originally released in 1995 on the album Black in Mind ) as a single and music video, the band introduces their current line-up, which after the departure of guitarist Marcos Rodriguez by two new guitarists (Stefan Weber (ex-Axxis) and Jean Bormann (AngelInc, Rage & Ruins)) was expanded again to a strength of four members. The band had been thinking about this return to the original line-up for a long time.

style

On the first Rage albums, Peter Wagner sang very high and the songs were more in the speed metal area. Since the album The Missing Link the singing has gotten deeper and deeper. After the album Black in Mind a much quieter style was adopted. This was held until the appointment. From Welcome to the Other Side , Rage played Power Metal again . After the entry of Victor Smolski , the style became more progressive and technically more demanding. Carved in Stone then went back in the direction of earlier albums such as Black in Mind or The Missing Link . 21 is similar to Carved in Stone in the style of the earlier albums, with the song Serial Killer being set in the Death Metal area. After separating from Victor Smolski in 2015, there was a definitive return to the original style of the band, underpinned by some new recordings of pieces from earlier creative periods ( Higher than the Sky , The Price of War ).
