The Wok World Championship or Wok World Championship was a competition held from 2003 to 2015 in which the athletes drive a luge and bobsleigh track with a modified Asian wok . There was a single race ("single wok") and a team competition ("four-wok"), each with two rounds. The wok sport was only practiced as part of the TV program .

The annual competition was broadcast live by the German private broadcaster ProSieben , and from 2009 the program was declared a long-term commercial. Like all sports events from TV, it was basically structured like a regular sports broadcast, but almost all participants were celebrities from the fields of sports and entertainment, and humorous and musical elements also played an important role. The theme music was Olympic Fanfare and Theme by John Williams , originally composed for the 1984 Summer Olympics .

history

Stefan Raab and Georg Hackl at the 2008 Wok World Cup

During his participation in the ZDF show Wetten, dass ..? On February 22nd, 2003, Stefan Raab offered as a bet in which a car drove down the natural toboggan run in Unterammergau to ride a bobsled run with a wok. Although he won the bet, he cashed his bet and rode the bobsleigh and toboggan run in Winterberg in a Chinese wok. Raab then staged the television program “1. official Wok World Championship ”(Wok World Championship), from which he himself emerged as the winner in the single wok. The four-wok race was won by Dick Brave and the Backbeats .

Due to the high ratings of the first event, the second Wok World Championship was held just four months later. Georg Hackl, known from tobogganing, won in a single wok and the team from ProSieben in a four-person wok.

The third Wok World Championship took place on March 5, 2005 again in Winterberg. In contrast to the previous competitions, two runs were held and the times added up. Due to the commercial success of the first two programs, the teams were named after sponsors for the first time and each four-wok was assigned a single wok. Another premiere of this competition was the qualifying held the evening before , in which the order of the starting positions was determined by jumping from a trick ski jump . A specialty among the teams at this Wok World Cup was the Jamaican bobsleigh team , which reached fourth place overall in the four-man wok. Between 2005 and 2010, a spectator was allowed to ride a wildcard at every Wok World Cup .

On March 11, 2006 the fourth Wok World Championship took place in Innsbruck , where Joey Kelly secured his first individual title. On March 9, 2007 in Innsbruck and on March 8, 2008 in Altenberg, Georg Hackl won the third and fourth gold medals in the single wok.

The 7th Wok World Championship was held on March 7, 2009 in Winterberg, followed by the 8th Wok World Championship on March 19, 2010 in Oberhof.

As in 2004, 2006 and 2007, the 9th Wok World Championships took place on March 12, 2011 on the Igls bobsleigh rink in Innsbruck.

Eight participants (Georg Hackl, Joey Kelly, Stefan Raab, Lucy Diakovska , Felix Loch , Christian Clerici , Armin Zöggeler and Detlef D! Soost ) succeeded in winning a medal in the single discipline.

The wok

The sports equipment itself was basically a conventional, handcrafted wok made of sheet steel, such as is used in large kitchens. The diameter is 66 cm, the wall thickness about 2 mm. In order to make the wok race-ready, an unchanged damping element made of polyurethane has been built into the bottom of the bowl since 2003 , which in addition to damping vibrations also prevented the wok from denting while driving. A cut-open PU tube was attached to the upper edge of the wok for protection, over which a foam material was laminated.

Until 2009, the participants were encouraged to independently carry out "tuning" measures on their woks. Only Georg Hackl was forbidden for a short time during the fourth Wok World Championships to start with his special wok made of ice-skate steel. At the sixth Wok World Cup, rules regarding weight limits were introduced for the first time. The wok and driver were allowed to weigh a maximum of 138 kg in a single wok and a maximum of 490 kg in a four-person wok. This rule was changed at the 7th Wok World Championship for Jumbo Carpenter , as he alone weighed 158 kg.

Due to the high speeds achieved in 2009 and the associated dangers, no changes have been made to the wok since 2010 that include polishing and heating the wok to reduce the resistance and adding weight to the driver's body up to the weight of the heaviest Participant went out.

6th Wok World Championship 2008

The 6th Wok World Championships took place on March 8, 2008 on the racing sledge and bobsleigh track in Altenberg (Saxony), which is particularly demanding because of its steep start (power tower). Reiner Calmund redeemed his betting debt from the previous year and drove in a single wok - albeit out of competition, as he exceeded the weight limit of 130 kg introduced for the first time at this Wok World Championship.

At this Wok World Championship, Stefan Raab did not achieve any of the top three places for the first time since the competition was held in the single wok. The music wok was the first wok in World Cup history to get stuck on the track in the second run. In the ProSieben wok, the two women were replaced in the second run by Jan Stecker and Joey Kelly.

The sixth Wok World Cup was watched by 2.88 million viewers. This enabled the show to achieve a market share of 12 percent. In the advertising-relevant target group, 2.20 million people, which corresponds to a market share of 21.5 percent, saw the program. The program was moderated by Oliver Welke , Sonya Kraus and Matthias Opdenhövel .

The music guests were Fettes Brot with “Bettina, please put something on”, Stefanie Heinzmann with “My Man is a mean Man” and Enrique Iglesias with “Tired Of Being Sorry”.

10th Wok World Championship 2012

The 10th Wok World Championship was held on March 10, 2012 at the Königssee on the artificial ice rink there . In qualifying, Michel Teló appeared with Ai Se Eu Te Pego and Olly Murs with Heart Skips A Beat , in the main broadcast the band Kraftklub with songs for Liam , Roman Lob with Standing Still and Taio Cruz with Troublemaker . For the first time, the candidates competed in one and four wok for nations, so the teams also had the name of a nation in addition to their normal name.

Attendees

In qualifying, Tim Lobinger competed in the individual qualification for Stefan Raab, as he had to moderate. Unscheduled, there were two other changes in the main show: Giovanni Zarrella (Italy) replaced Wolfgang Lippert (GDR) and Lukas Plöchl from the Trackshittaz replaced Christian Clerici (both Austria). Aílton was the first participant to fail because he was so slow that the momentum wasn't enough and he stopped along the way. He didn't run in the second round.

Surreptitious advertising allegation

After the 2007 World Cup, the media supervisory authorities of the state media authorities criticized surreptitious advertising during the event. While ProSieben argued that the company logos affixed to the suits of the athletes, the racing equipment and the racetrack were the generally accepted perimeter and jersey advertising, the media supervisory authority saw an inadmissible mixture of program and advertising. Although ProSieben, according to its own statements, did not receive any money from the companies for the perimeter advertising, the company that rented the advertising space was a wholly-owned subsidiary of ProSieben. A hearing on this took place in mid-April 2007.

On December 11, 2008, the Berlin Administrative Court dismissed ProSieben's action against a notice of objection and prohibition issued by the Berlin-Brandenburg Media Authority (MABB). Accordingly, ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG is responsible for the inadmissible visual and verbal integration of brand names . For this reason, ProSieben has marked the Wok World Cup qualification and the Wok World Cup as long-term advertising since 2009 . Other Raab productions such as TV total Turmspringen have since carried the title of permanent advertising, while TV total was marked as a permanent television broadcast until the end of 2013 out of protest .
