Fritz Strobl (born August 24, 1972 in Lienz ) is a former Austrian ski racer . At the turn of the millennium he was one of the world's best athletes in the downhill and super-G disciplines . He won nine races in the Ski World Cup , was Olympic downhill champion in 2002 and world champion in team competition in 2007 and vice world champion in Super-G. Due to the characterizing him "creeping" driving style commentator called him Robert Seeger Fritz the Cat (Fritz the Cat) , but his real nickname in the Austrian ski team was Friedl .

Career

Fritz Strobl (2013)

Strobl grew up in Gerlamoos in the Steinfeld community , where his parents ran a farm. He started skiing when he was seven. His talent was soon discovered, whereupon he joined the local ski club SG Steinfeld . In the Carinthian national team, Strobl was initially noticed as a slalom specialist, but after finishing second at the Austrian youth championships, he concentrated on the fast disciplines. After graduating from the ski trade school in Schladming , he began training as a gendarme in Großgmain , which gave him enough time for training.

1990 Strobl rose to the national team. It had its premiere in the World Cup on January 5, 1991; he finished the downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 33rd place. Three months later he had a serious fall in a race in the Nor-Am Cup and tore the cruciate ligament and the inner ligament in his left knee . After his recovery, he mainly competed in FIS races and European Cup races. In sporadic World Cup races he was hardly noticed. As the winner of the Super-G ranking of the European Cup in the 1995/96 season, however, he was able to secure a permanent place in the World Cup team.

On December 15, 1996, Strobl achieved a completely surprising victory in Val-d'Isère at the first World Cup descent of the season. He confirmed this success with victories on the Streif in Kitzbühel and in Vail . He finished the 1997 world championship downhill in Sestriere in fourth place, after having led in the last split. He was missing a hundredth of a second to win a medal. The 1997/98 season did not go according to plan. After several failures, he was just able to qualify for participation in the 1998 Winter Olympics. In the Olympic Downhill from Hakuba near Nagano , he finished eleventh. In the nine-fold victory of the Austrians on the Patscherkofel, he finished third.

In the following season Strobl had to record several failures, which he missed the qualification for the 1999 World Cup in Vail. The 1999/2000 season was again extremely successful: Strobl won the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm run for the second time and won a Super-G for the first time in St. Anton am Arlberg . In the following winter he secured a starting place for the 2001 World Championships early on with a downhill win on the Kandahar course in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In St. Anton, however, he could not live up to his role as a favorite and finished sixth.

After a downhill win in Bormio and a Super G win in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Strobl was once again one of the favorites before the 2002 Winter Olympics . On February 10, 2002, he won the gold medal in the Olympic Downhill and thus celebrated the greatest success of his career. Six days later he was fourth in the Super-G. He finished the World Cup season fifth in the overall standings and second in the downhill standings. Although Strobl was able to achieve some results in the top ten in the 2002/03 World Cup season, he did not get beyond tenth place in the downhill at the 2003 World Cup . Also in the 2003/04 season he showed consistently good performances, but did not win.

In the 2004/05 season it was enough Strobl to a third place four times, at the World Championships 2005 in Bormio he drove as fourth of the descent just past a medal. At the start of the 2005/06 season, he won the Lake Louise Downhill ; it would be his last victory. With four more podium places, he finished second in the discipline ranking. At the highlight of the season, the 2006 Winter Olympics , he finished eighth in the downhill. The last highlight of Strobl's career was the 2007 World Cup in Åre : In the Super-G he won the silver medal and in the team competition he was world champion.

At the beginning of 2007 Strobl tried his hand at singing. What was initially only intended as a short gag for an advertising spot by ÖSV sponsor Iglo developed into a cult hit. A single was then produced, the proceeds of which went to the disabled athletes in the ÖSV. With the title Genie auf der Skis , “Fritz & The Downhill Gang” (with Werner Franz , Klaus Kröll , Hans Grugger , Andreas Buder and Christoph Kornberger as background singers) rose to number 2 in the Austrian charts in February. On March 15, 2007, Strobl started his last World Cup race on Lenzerheide in Mozart costume. He was inspired by his song Genie auf der Skis, the first line of which is “I am the Mozart of the Mousetrap…”. During the race he made several stops on the slopes, said goodbye to the coaches and was carried on the shoulders by his teammates at the finish. He then officially announced his resignation.

In the civil profession, Strobl is an executive officer of the federal police . Interior Minister Liese Prokop introduced him on August 17, 2006 as the new President of the Children's Police . Strobl has been married since 1999 and has two sons.
