The brand name Eskimo was created in 1927 for the first "ice lolly" from Wiener Milchindustrie AG (MIAG). In 1960 the MIAG ice cream business was taken over by the Austrian Unilever Ges.mbH .

The frozen food production (TKK) founded by Hans Petter in Raasdorf in 1946 was taken over by Unilever in 1962. In 1965 the first combined ice cream and frozen food production was opened in Groß-Enzersdorf . This means that both Eskimo and Iglo production were relocated to the new factory.

In 1960 the name "Iglo" was first used in the Netherlands for the marketing of frozen foods such as fish fingers and spinach , Iglo being the Dutch name for igloo .

In 1970 the Unilever subsidiary Eskimo Eis / Petter Iglo TKK merged with the Nestlé subsidiary Jopa Eis / Findus TKK to form Eskimo-Iglo GmbH (Unilever 75%, Nestlé 25%). In 1977 Eskimo-Iglo was split up into the two companies Unifrost (production) and Eskimo-Iglo (sales). In 1986 Unilever took over the remaining 25% of Unifrost / Eskimo-Iglo and became the sole owner.

After 45 years, on February 9, 2006, Unilever announced the sale of its European frozen food brands “Iglo” and “Birds Eye”. The reasons given were the increasing competition from cheap products and insufficient profit and growth prospects. The “Findus” brand, which is strong there, was retained in Italy. Therefore, on July 1, 2006, the frozen food division was spun off into the newly founded Iglo GmbH. Iglo and Birds Eye were sold on August 28, 2006 for 1.73 billion euros to the private equity company Permira . The “Birds Eye Iglo” group has been operating under the name “Iglo Food Group Limited” since mid-2011.

In April 2015, Iglo was sold to the American investor group Nomad Foods Limited for 2.6 billion euros. Nomad Foods is currently active in 17 countries with the main brands iglo, Findus, BirdsEye.

In Austria Iglo counts with around 230 products, including a wide range of seafood, vegetables and herbs, poultry and ready meals and desserts to the well-known brands in the Austrian food trade.

All Iglo sea fish products have the MSC seal ; from the beginning of 2020 all freshwater fish will be ASC certified. In addition to product innovations for the Austrian market, polar cod , fish fingers and apricot dumplings are among the most popular products among Austrians.

Iglo's brand identity has been accompanied by Käpt'n Iglo since 1985, and the ski team of the Austrian Ski Association was the brand's testimonial for years.
