biography

Andrea Ellenberger comes from Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden and starts for the local ski club. She attended sports secondary school in Engelberg and is now completing a bachelor 's distance learning course in psychology .

At the age of 15 she competed in her first FIS races in Zinal . At the beginning of her career, she shared a fan club for several years with Reto Schmidiger , who, like her, comes from Hergiswil. In 2010 she suffered a torn cruciate ligament for the first time and had knee problems in the following winters. In December 2011 she also made her debut in Zinal in the European Cup and a few weeks later won a Swiss youth champion title in giant slalom at Hoch-Ybrig . She then took part in a junior world championship for the first time in Roccaraso . As with her second appearance two years later in Jasná , she was eliminated in the second round of the giant slalom.

For the 2012/13 season she was in Swiss-Ski's C-squad and made her World Cup debut on December 16, 2012 in the giant slalom in Courchevel . As a result, she started mainly in the European Cup, in which she achieved her best result for the time being with sixth place in November 2013 in Levi. It was only used sporadically in the World Cup, but was never able to qualify for a second round. In January 2016, she tore the cruciate ligament in her right knee and initially continued with a knee brace. After the lack of results, she deleted Swiss-Ski from all the squads and underwent an operation on her injured knee in October. After suffering from back pain for six years, she decided to have another operation. In spring 2017, an intervertebral disc was removed by previously stiffening a vertebra . Since the doctors were not previously aware of a similar procedure in an athlete, the end of her career was also on the horizon.

In September 2017 Ellenberger skied for the first time and made her racing comeback in February 2018. The following summer she traveled to Argentina on her own initiative , where she competed in several races. She won a giant slalom belonging to the South American Cup, an FIS race and the Argentine championships in her favorite discipline, after which she invited the Swiss team to practice. In October 2018 she was finally able to get back into the World Cup in Sölden - four years after her last start. On December 28th, she won her first World Cup points at Semmering with 22nd place. Two and a half weeks later she approached the top ten for the first time with eleventh place on Kronplatz . At the World Championships in Åre , she won the gold medal in the team competition , but was not used as a substitute driver. In the giant slalom, she finished tenth.
