biography

Youth and European Cup

Thalmann comes from Berg im Drautal in Carinthia and attended the Sport- BORG in Spittal an der Drau , where she graduated in 2009 . She drove her first FIS races in December 2004 and was accepted into the junior squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) in 2006.

After her first podium places in FIS races, she was used for the first time in the European Cup in November 2007 . In her first full European Cup season in 2008/09 , she celebrated her first victory in the Trysil slalom on November 27 and achieved three more podium places. She was fourth in the overall ranking, sixth in the slalom and seventh in the giant slalom ranking.

At the Austrian Championships in March 2009 she was second in the combination, at the Junior World Championships in the same month a 15th place in slalom was her best result. On November 29, 2009 she won the second European Cup victory in the Funäsdalen slalom . With another two podium places she achieved third place in the slalom classification and sixth place in the super combination classification in the 2009/10 season . On March 19th, 2010 Thalmann became Austrian champion in the super combined. Four days earlier, she was second in the slalom behind Marlies Schild . In 2010, after a year in the B-squad, she rose to the A-squad of the ÖSV.

World Cup and major events

In the World Cup , Thalmann first started in the slalom in Semmering on December 29, 2008 , but retired in the first round. Also in the following World Cup appearances, she did not bring a result to the finish. At the end of April 2010 Thalmann suffered a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear in his right knee while playing soccer . After the injury break, she was on the podium in the European Cup for the first time in February 2011. On March 10, 2011, she won her third European Cup race, the slalom in Soldeu . This made her third in the slalom classification and sixth in the overall classification in the 2010/11 season .

On November 27th, 2011 Thalmann took 23rd place in the slalom in Aspen and thus won World Cup points for the first time. Three weeks later she achieved her first top 10 result in the World Cup with ninth place in the Courchevel slalom . Thalmann could not qualify for the slalom of the home world championship 2013 . However, she was part of the Austrian world championship team in the team competition , where she was only used in the quarter-finals. In the 2015/16 season Carmen Thalmann made the leap to the top of the world in slalom. After a 5th place in Aspen on November 29, 2015, she achieved the best World Cup result of her career with a 4th place in the home race in Lienz on December 29, 2015 . On November 21, 2016, Thalmann fell during slalom training in Copper Mountain and suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, which meant that the season came to an early end after only two races.

In April 2018 Thalmann surprisingly announced her retirement from active competitive sport.
