The 43rd Alpine World Ski Championships took place in Vail / Beaver Creek from February 2 to 15, 2015 , with the individual competitions taking place in Beaver Creek and the team competition in Vail. After seven title fights in a row in Europe , the world championships were held in America for the first time since 1999 . Vail had also been the venue in 1989 and 1999 .

Applicants

In addition to the two ski resorts in the US state of Colorado , St. Moritz (Switzerland) and Cortina d'Ampezzo were also available as venues. All three locations had already applied for the 2013 World Cup , but were inferior to Schladming's candidacy . At the FIS Congress on June 3, 2010 in Antalya , Turkey , the US application prevailed with 8 out of 15 possible votes in the first ballot. Cortina d'Ampezzo received 4 votes and St. Moritz received 3 votes.

Slopes

Adjacent to the existing Birds of Prey ski slope , on which the men's races took place as at the 1999 World Cup, another called Raptor was added. The women's competitions were held on this downhill slope, which was completed in 2013. For the new runway, the time measurement building was relocated from the west to the east side of the finish area, the Red Tail section was redesigned, and the Talons restaurant was rebuilt behind the finish area. The restaurant building also housed the central press center during the 2015 World Cup.

Attendees

Shortly before the start of the world championships, around 700 athletes from 68 different countries were registered; they fought for a total of 33 medals.

Worth mentioning

  • The Italian team remained without a medal and there were parallels to the World Championships in 1989 and 1999, when the "Squadra Azzura" had to leave without a medal.
  • The award ceremonies were accompanied by the performance of the national anthems by the “Colorado Children's Choir” at Solaris Plaza in Vail. The Austrian hymn was performed according to the version that had been customary up to now, only the "great sons" were sung about, but not the "great daughters" that have recently been added to the text.
  • The venue turned out to be an expensive place. The day lift pass for an adult was US $ 145. A night in the hotel "Charter", where the ÖSV stars stayed, was available from 315 dollars (279.38 euros). In the press center at the foot of the world championship slopes, a cheeseburger, fries and a drink were asked for $ 35 (EUR 31.04).

length: 2623 m, max. Incline: 63%
Course setter: Hannes Trinkl (FIS)

Eliminated: Klemen Kosi (SLO), Istok Rodeš (CRO)

Defending champion Svindal came to the World Championship after an injury he had suffered before the start of the season without having competed in a race. He delivered a remarkably strong performance under this aspect.
In the short term it looked like a double success for Switzerland (No. 19 Küng before No. 15 Feuz) before this duo broke up with No. 22 Ganong and, on the other hand, pushed his teammate Nyman (No. 10) off the podium. - The best runner only on rank 12 was the worst downhill result of the ÖSV men at world championships.
The course setting and the slope itself proved to be particularly difficult this time, small mistakes were immediately "punished" with time losses. The number one favorite was the three-time winner of the season Jansrud; the other three winners were Nyman in Val Gardena, Ganong in Santa Caterina and Reichelt on the Lauberhorn. Although Küng had also recently finished fourth on the Lauberhorn and Feuz even second, not necessarily that much had spoken for them. Feuz was also aware of his recurring health problems, so he did not even start a week later in Kitzbühel after finishing 2nd. Küng's performance curve was too unstable. But on that day, the two found the best mix of all the components that was required for this route. While the two US runners made an excellent run over the entire route, Jansrud (No. 18) and Reichelt (No. 21) made inexplicable mistakes. Various runners who were not among the favorites at all, such as Ondřej Bank (No. 29) or Weibrecht (No. 35 - he was even in first place in the penultimate interim time and still in second place in the last!) Placed well. The Italian team also experienced a serious disappointment with 23rd place for Dominik Paris (deficit 1.94 s). Not much was to be expected from the small German team. A possible aspirant to be able to follow in the footsteps of Max Rauffer or Florian Eckert , Stephan Keppler , had not found his form after his serious fall in Wengen and quit his racing career after the end of the season last year.

Defending champion: Ted Ligety

Route: Birds of Prey
starting altitude: 3337 m, target altitude: 2730 m, difference in altitude: 607 m
length: 1879 m, max. Inclination: 68%
Course setter: Florian Winkler (AUT)
65 drivers at the start, 50 in the classification.
Eliminated among others: Travis Ganong (USA), Bode Miller (USA), Manuel Osborne-Paradis (CAN), Ondřej Bank (CZE), Ivica Kostelić (CRO), Andreas Romar (FIN)

Winner Hannes Reichelt had already won a World Cup Super-G three times here on the "Birds of Prey", the last time around two months earlier, which was one of the main reasons why he was one of the favorites for this race. As one with an early start number, Ganong crashed with No. 3, but the "insider tip" was Bode Miller, who started again for the first time after a long break with No. 9. He also had the best intermediate times of the previous runners, but he fell on one of the last. He could probably have won a medal, possibly even a gold medal, based on the times measured.
In the further course of the race Svindal (No. 14 - he had only entered the World Championship speed competitions after an injury break) took the lead, but was overtaken by the next Théaux, who in turn stayed ahead of Mayer. After Reichelt's run, one of the biggest favorites, Jansrud, scored the same time as Mayer; his hand got stuck on a gate right after the start; How much else would have been possible for him could only be guessed by comparing the first interim times, when he was still “only” 0.16 seconds slower than Reichelt. But he and Mayer seemed to achieve the bronze medal. Then Cook surprised with No. 28, who was just as fast as the ones ranked according to Reichelt and who was absolutely the second best brand in the last interim.

The Czech Ondřej Bank had a hard fall while jumping the finish line in the downhill race and was disqualified for a goal mistake. He had already surprised with 9th place in the special descent and was now on the verge of achieving a good finish time in the "combined descent", which would have made him one of the favorites due to his equally good slalom ability. As it was, he suffered injuries and severe abrasions and was hospitalized. This bad luck benefited Marcel Hirscher, who remained in the top thirty due to the disqualification of Bank and as a departure 30. was the first to contest the slalom, which was an advantage given the high temperatures and the slope that quickly deteriorated as a result. Speed specialist Jansrud had to contest the slalom as the fastest downhill in thirtieth and came closest to Hirscher's total time of downhill and slalom. Thus, in the Alpine Combined, the two leaders in the World Cup landed on the first two places, one with the best slalom time, the other with the best downhill time. Ligety also benefited from the early slalom start number.

As in the Super-G three days before, there was a hundredths duel between Maze and Fenninger; the Austrian with no. 16 had submitted, Maze successfully countered with no. 21; Both runners were not in the foreground in the first real split, the second (of four) had a tie, after that Maze was in first place - and she was consistently ahead of the Austrian (maximum advantage 0.54 s), but her credit shrank more and more, with the last one it was only 0.12 s.
The convalescent Lindsey Vonn, who started last of the top group (No. 22), could not match her performance from the Super-G, her deficit even increased from 0.49 to 1.20 s, of which she still has a little could make up for.
Jnglin-Kamer had the best first interim time with 0.54 seconds ahead of the simultaneous Maze and Fenninger. Also noteworthy are the tight time gaps between ranks 4 to 7.

The race was originally supposed to start at 11:00 a.m., but had to be moved five gates down due to strong winds. The start was finally 30 minutes late at 11:30 a.m.

What is remarkable about the result of the first race to this World Cup is that the overall World Cup winners of the last three years (2014 Fenninger, 2013 Maze, 2012 Vonn) stood together on the podium.
Another interesting fact that can be mentioned is that the gap between first and second placed, as at the previous World Championships in Vail in 1989 and 1999, was also 3 hundredths.

As in the World Cup season, there was the frequent duel between Maze and Fenninger. For the time being, Rebensburg (No. 10) had taken the lead with a clear nine tenths of a second on Elena Curtoni (No. 2), Hütter (No. 15) undercut this time again relatively clearly, while Lara Gut (No. 16) only came in third came in the intermediate ranking. After the fall of Hosp (No. 17) it was questionable to what extent Lindsey Vonn (No. 18) was fit enough for her comeback, which she proved with a new best time. But Maze (No. 19) was a little faster, Weirather (No. 20) stayed behind Rebensburg, Görgl (No. 21) was out. Olympic champion Fenninger started last of this top group 16 to 22 and was ahead of all intermediate time stops, but lost continuously (with only 0.33 s in the first measurement). Maze was practically always in second place, while Vonn drove the last two sections the fastest and thus overtook Hütter.

Eliminated: Priska Nufer (SUI), Maria Therese Tviberg (NOR), Lindsey Vonn (USA)

Maze benefited from her good downhill performance when she was 9 tenths faster than Hosp and 1.33 s faster than Kirchgasser. Her distances on Lara Gut (0.02 s) and Fenninger (0.26 s) were smaller, but she didn't need to worry too much about their weakness in slalom. Of the better female slalom riders, Zettel was 1.75 seconds behind; Lindsey Vonn had already gambled away her chances for a medal, 1.31 seconds behind. With the exception of Fenninger, the three ÖSV runners were also faster than the Slovenian and if Hosp had set the best time achieved by Kirchgasser, she would have taken gold with eight hundredths of a second ahead of Maze.

length: 1305 m, max. Incline: 50% Course

1st run: Valerio Ghirardi (SLO)
2nd run: Christian Thoma (SWE)
116 riders registered, 113 at the start; 96 of them in the rating after the first run, but only 60 allowed for the second run - and ultimately 56 classified; the last Helga Vilhjalmsdotter from Iceland was 16.38 s behind
Eliminated among others: Eva-Maria Brem (AUT), Lara Gut (SUI), Anémone Marmottan (FRA), Federica Brignone (ITA) (all in the first run); four eliminated in the second run, including Marta Bassino (ITA), Taïna Barioz (FRA)

Silver medalist Rebensburg was classified in 11th place after the first run and achieved the fastest time in the second run. Defending champion Worley finished thirteenth.
After the first run, Fenninger, who started the race with No. 7, was already 0.81 seconds ahead of Kirchgasser, who delivered a surprise with No. 19. Lindell was third and Maze was fourth with + 1.10 s. The deficit of Rebensburg of 1.70 s seemed too big to achieve anything decisive. But Shiffrin stayed a little below expectations, with a deficit of 1.72 s at the same time as Zettel in 13th place. Worley was in 20th place (+ 2.40 s), Lindsey Vonn (start number 31) in 1: 11.65 in 27th place. Brem, who started with number 4 and who was one of the favorites, had already at the first transition in this early phase of the race, according to internal stops, had the better time than Fenninger, missed the direction and was eliminated. Lara Gut (No. 9) and Brignone (No. 13) didn't get very far either, whereas Marmottan (No. 10) was eliminated with the second best intermediate time (0.44 s behind Fenninger).
In the second run Vonn set the fifth-best time, which brought her 14th place in 2: 22.38. Later, Zettel (fourth term) was able to rank better than Shiffrin for the time being; then Rebensburg achieved a through time of 0.73 s better with 1: 09.88, which ultimately turned out to be the best running time. Runner after runner failed; she finally overtook Maze (seventh time) and also Lindell (sixth time) and had the medal. Kirchgasser only brought the eleventh term together - only Fenninger was still on top. But she was measured with a lead of 1.80 seconds in the second intermediate time, only a mistake in the finish slope (she called this action a "pizza cut", an expression that is used for such a transverse position in the ski kindergarten) made her lose 0.30 s slower than Rebensburg.

Team competition

Date : February 10, 2015
Route: Golden Peak, Vail

The team competition was held in the form of a parallel giant slalom. In each round, two women and two men from one team competed against each other in four runs, the winning team received one point per run; if the runtime was the same, both teams got one point. With a final score of 2: 2, the sum of the running times of the fastest woman and the fastest man per team decided.

16 starting places were available for the race; The best 16 teams in the current Nations Cup ranking of the 2014/15 season would have qualified . However, since Liechtenstein (13th) and Slovakia (15th) did not start, Great Britain (20th) and Argentina (without World Cup points) were able to take the remaining two starting positions.

Argentina, Great Britain and Russia took part in such a competition for the first time.

The Austrian Marcel Hirscher, the Canadian Erin Mielzynski and the Swede André Myhrer were the only ones who could win all four duels.

The silver medal for Canada was a big surprise, because so far the "maple leaves" had not reached a podium in any team competition (neither in the World Cup nor at the World Championships).
