Reinfried Herbst (born October 11, 1978 in Salzburg ) is a former Austrian ski racer . In the World Cup he started exclusively in the slalom discipline , in the European Cup also in the giant slalom . Herbst won the silver medal in slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics and the slalom world cup in the 2009/10 season .
biography
Herbst attended the main ski school in Bad Gastein and the ski trade school in Stams . He then completed military service at the Hochfilzen Army Sports and Close Combat School and began training at the customs guard . He completed the subsequent training to become an executive officer in 2005. He has had a son since 2007 and a daughter since 2010.
Herbst achieved his first success in the winter of 1991 when he became the Austrian student champion in the Super-G. After several top 10 results in FIS races , he was accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association in 1996 . Due to injury, he had to pause almost the entire 1996/97 season. After his first victory in an FIS race, he made his first appearance in the European Cup in January 1998 . In March 1998 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Megève and finished fourth in slalom. In the next few years, Herbst regularly scored points in the European Cup, but he only achieved his first top 10 result at the end of the 1999/2000 season when he finished third in the slalom from See . Also in the 2000/01 season he was only able to post a top 10 result (sixth place in the first slalom in Donnersbach ). At his first World Cup start in the slalom in Kitzbühel on January 21, 2001, he did not qualify for the second round. After a new injury in November 2001, he could not contest any more races for the rest of this winter.
In the 2002/03 comeback season, Herbst achieved four top 10 results in the European Cup , all of them in the giant slalom, placing him tenth in the discipline classification. In the World Cup he was able to score for the first time in December 2002 with 13th place in the knockout slalom in Sestriere , but remained without a result in his other six slalom starts. In the next winter, too, he achieved no result in his three World Cup races. He fared better in the 2003/04 season in the European Cup, where he celebrated his first victories in the two slaloms in Todtnau in January , thus finishing second in the slalom ranking with Italian Lucas Senoner and thus a fixed starting place for the World Cup secured. In the giant slalom, he achieved two third places, placing him fifth in this discipline and fourth in the overall classification. In the 2004/05 World Cup season he achieved only two results in eight slaloms (20th place in Beaver Creek and 16th in Schladming ), which is why he was dismissed from the ÖSV squad in spring 2005 for lack of good results.
Herbst had to complete the summer training at his own expense and was only able to qualify for the World Cup again shortly before the start of the 2005/06 season . Within a few weeks he established himself at the top of the world slalom: On December 12, 2005, Herbst was among the top ten for the first time in Madonna di Campiglio and on January 22, 2006, he was second in the slalom in Kitzbühel for the first time on the podium. A month later he had his greatest success so far at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , when he won the silver medal in slalom behind Benjamin Raich . Two weeks later he celebrated his first World Cup victory in the slalom of Shigakōgen (ex aequo with Kalle Palander ) and after the winter he was called up to the national team of the ÖSV.
On July 21, 2006, Herbst suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee during a charity soccer game . After a quick rehabilitation, he was able to participate in World Cup races again six months later, at the end of January 2007, and qualify for the 2007 World Championship in Åre in February , where he was eliminated in the first round. He achieved his best season result in the World Cup with eighth place at the finals in Lenzerheide . In the 2007/08 season , Herbst returned to the podium. He won the slaloms in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Bormio , was third in Zagreb and thus reached third place in the Slalom World Cup. He also celebrated two victories in Adelboden and Schladming in the 2008/09 season . He also came second in Wengen and third in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the Slalom World Cup, however, he fell two places back to fifth. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , Herbst, like two years earlier, was eliminated in the first slalom run. Between the World Cup races, he often competes in the European Cup, where he finished second in the slalom classification with four and three wins in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons.
The 2009/10 World Cup season began in autumn with two victories in Levi and Alta Badia . Two more victories followed at the end of January in Schladming and Kranjska Gora . Herbst traveled to the 2010 Winter Olympics as a World Cup leader and one of the most mentioned favorites , but in Whistler he was only tenth. At the World Cup final in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he won the Slalom World Cup ranking just ahead of Julien Lizeroux . In contrast to previous years, Herbst did not win the World Cup in the 2010/11 season . He made it onto the podium twice and fell back to ninth place in the Slalom World Cup. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he retired in the second slalom run after he was tenth in the first run. Autumn fell further behind in the 2011/12 World Cup season. He came only once as eighth in the Schladming slalom under the top ten and finished 25th in the Slalom World Cup - his worst result in seven years. Although Herbst made it into the top ten five times in the 2012/13 season , he was not nominated for the 2013 World Cup due to strong competition within the team . The 2013/14 season was mixed, autumn rarely brought good runs to the finish line, and there was speculation that a career might end. In April 2014, however, he announced that he wanted to continue his career for at least two years and extended the contract with his supplier until the end of the 2015/16 season.
After the slalom in Kranjska Gora on March 6, 2016, in which he started the race with start number 66 (final position 63, which is far from qualifying for the second run), he ended his active career.
