The Church of All Nations (Latin: Basilica Agoniae Domini ; also Church of Nations or Basilica of Fear of Death ) is a Roman Catholic sacred building in the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and belongs to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem . Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land are active as pastors .

According to Matthew 26 : 36–46 EU and Mark 14: 25–42 EU , Jesus of Nazareth prayed at this point in the awareness of what was to come before he was betrayed by Judas Iscariot . The church refers in particular to the passage that has only been handed down by the Evangelist Luke 22:44 EU : "And in his fear he prayed even more ardently and his sweat was like blood that dripped onto the earth." This blood sweating is an indication of the fear of death Jesus and his human being .

The church was built between 1919 and 1924 with funds from twelve countries. Hence the name Church of the Nations comes from . The coat of arms of each of the participating countries can be found in a separate section on the ceiling of the church. These are the coats of arms of Argentina , Brazil , Chile and Mexico on the left , Italy , France , Spain and the United Kingdom follow in the middle of the church , and Belgium , Canada , Germany and the United States on the right .

The three-aisled church has the classic basilica shape without a tower, but twelve domes, which stand for the twelve apostles, which are supported by six red-brown columns as a symbol for the olive trees. The interior is relatively gloomy in keeping with the fear of death. The altar stands in front of the rock on which Jesus is said to have prayed and is surrounded by a lattice reminiscent of the crown of thorns.

The present church stands on the foundations of a 4th century Byzantine basilica, built by Emperor Theodosius I , which was destroyed in an earthquake in 746, and a 12th century Crusader church which was destroyed in 1345. Parts of the original floor are still visible in the church today.
