The Trinity Church is the monumental cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) in Jerusalem . It is located in the Russian Quarter about 400 meters northwest of the old city of Jerusalem .

history

The St. Petersburg- based Russian Mission in the Holy Land, from which the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society emerged in 1882 , planned and financed the church in 1860, as the flow of pilgrims to the holy places of Palestine in the then Ottoman Empire increased sharply.

The church was built between 1860 and 1872 by the Russian architect Martin Iwanowitsch Eppinger . He designed it based on the Red Square in Moscow. Among the few examples of Russian sacred architecture in the Holy Land, it became one of the most beautiful and also one of the most striking churches in West Jerusalem .

The cathedral had to be abandoned when the First World War broke out because the Turks drove the Christians out of Jerusalem. It was not returned to Russian hands until 1948, immediately after the establishment of the State of Israel.

The Trinity Cathedral is still a popular destination and meeting place for Russian pilgrims .

Appearance

The three-aisled church has four massive octagonal towers and is studded with Byzantine- influenced green domes. Inside it has high vaults with blue walls. Massive, glittering chandeliers, numerous precious icons and an artistic iconostasis complete the equipment.
