The Kidane Mihiret Church , also Kidane Mehret or Kidane Mihret ( Amharic ኪዳኔ ምህረት ), is a church of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Jerusalem .

The church building is part of the Debre Genet monastery (ደብረ ገነት) and is the second Ethiopian monastery complex in Jerusalem , next to the small Ethiopian monastery Deir es-Sultan on the Church of the Holy Sepulcher .

history

The construction of the church in Jerusalem's New Town (southern part) was commissioned by the Ethiopian Emperor Yohannes IV in 1888 and - after his death in the Battle of Gallabat in 1889 - supported by his successor Menelik II and his wife Taytu . In 1901 the church was completed.

architecture

The church is a rotunda with a retracted dome , which reaches a height of about 30 m. An inscription written in Ge'ez and framed on both sides by depictions of the Lion of Judah above the entrance to the church commemorates the benefactor Menelik II.
