The Marian tomb in the Kidron Valley near Jerusalem is regarded as the burial place of Mary , the mother of Jesus , according to old church tradition . The tomb is at the foot of the Mount of Olives , near the Church of All Nations .

A small church was built there in the 4th century. Crusaders restored and expanded it in the 12th century before it was destroyed by Saladin after the conquest of Jerusalem. The crypt was spared and has been preserved to this day, as Mary is also venerated in Islam.

Today's church belongs to the Greek Orthodox and the Armenian Apostolic Church ; the Syrian-Orthodox , the Coptic-Orthodox and the Ethiopian-Orthodox Church may share it. A steep staircase behind the facade leads down to the tomb, where Mary is said to have been lying for a few days before her Ascension . The graves of their parents Joachim and Anna and their husband Josef are also shown there.

Every year a few days before the feast of the Assumption (according to the Julian calendar) there is a procession with the “corpse of Mary” from the city to the grave.

Next to the entrance to the church is the entrance to the Catholics ' Grotto of Treason , which is said to be built on the spot where Jesus was captured .

According to a Jerusalem tradition, Mary is said to have died on Mount Zion with the disciples. The Roman Catholic Dormition Church reminds of this .

In Ephesus, in today's Turkey, there is another place where Mary is said to have died or ascended to heaven, following another, much more recent hypothesis. The Marienhaus there, rediscovered in 1891, has been recognized by the Catholic Church as a place of pilgrimage since 1951 and a plenary indulgence has been gained with the visit since 1961 . The plenary indulgence, which was previously associated with a visit to the traditional Marian tomb in Jerusalem, was given in 1896 by Pope Leo XIII set aside for all time.
