St. Mark's Church (Jerusalem)
The Markuskirche (Church in the Markuskloster) is a church building in the Armenian quarter of the old city of Jerusalem .
history
A stone tablet found in 1940 indicates that "the house of Mary, the mother of John ( Acts 12.12 EU ), called Markus" stood on the site of the St. Mark's monastery . According to Syrian Orthodox tradition, the Last Supper was held here. According to tradition, the house is said to have been named a “church” by the apostles , an indication of the early veneration of this place. According to this tradition, this would be the ancient place to which the apostle Peter withdrew after his release from Herod's prison by an angel ( Acts 12 : 12–17 EU ).
The monastery was built by the crusaders in the 12th century and rebuilt several times in later years: in 1718 by Metropolitan Gregorius Schem'un, the following year by Abdel Ahad Fenah von Mardin, who was also responsible for the restoration of the old manuscripts now exhibited in the famous monastery library cared. Up until the last renovation in 1858, at least five other renovations were made.
meaning
The richly ornamented St. Mark's Church became the seat of the Archbishop of Jerusalem after the Syrian Orthodox Church lost its other churches and properties in the Holy City. Ignatius III was the first bishop known by name , he lived and worked here around 1471.
Upper Room
The Upper Room of the Syrian Orthodox tradition in this monastery is older than that on Mount Zion , and the relative height of the room at the time of Jesus is also more likely to be correct.
icon
In St. Mark's Church there is a baptismal font covered with silver , above which hangs an icon of Mary , which according to Eastern church tradition is said to have been painted by the Evangelist Luke as an authentic portrait of Mary.
