The co- cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus is co- cathedral of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem . It is located in the Christian Quarter of the old town about halfway between the New Gate and the Jaffa Gate on the city wall.

history

In 1847 the Ottoman Empire allowed the Catholic Church to re-establish its hierarchy in Palestine.

The co-cathedral, completed in 1872, is part of the building complex of the Latin Patriarchate and thus in fact its episcopal church. For historical reasons, however, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher officially has the rank of cathedral .

description

In the Gothic Revival style built, the church has the outline of a Greek cross with a length of 28 meters and a width of 24 meters. The central nave of the three-nave church is 8.5 meters wide, the side aisles 4.5 meters wide; these are built over with galleries. The church is decorated with four stained glass windows that mark the ends of the cross. Three of them have the same shape: the window above the high altar depicts the risen Christ as the victor over death, the windows on the transverse axis on the left the crucifixion, on the right the adoration of the newborn Savior by the Three Kings . The rear window above the entrance is a large rose window and shows the symbols of the four evangelists , in the center the Holy Scriptures . The church has five altars, three larger ones in the main nave and the two side aisles and two smaller ones at the ends of the transverse axis.
