The New Gate ( Hebrew השער החדש HaSha'ar HeChadash , Arabic الباب الجديد, DMG al-Bāb al-Ǧadīd  'the new gate') is one of the eight city gates of the old city of Jerusalem . It's located on the northwest corner of the walled urban area and is rather nondescript compared to the other gates.

The name New Gate refers to the fact that this gate to the old town was not established until 1889 to allow easier access from the Christian quarter of the old town to new Christian residential areas in front of the wall. The passage was closed from the founding of Israel to the capture of the old city by the Israeli army in the Six Day War .

location

Cars can drive through the gate so that the Roman Catholic institutions behind it can be reached. These are above all the Custody of the Holy Land and the Terra Sancta School of the Franciscans and the Patriarchate .

Opposite the gate is the old town hall, where Jaffastraße , the main street of the new town, begins. The route of the Jerusalem light rail goes right past the gate.
