The Gate of Herod ( Arabic باب الساهرة, DMG Bāb as-Sāhira  'Gate of the Guardian', Hebrew שער הפרחים[ ʃaˈar hapraˈxim ] 'flower gate '; Other names: Schaftor, Sha'ar Hordos) is one of the eight gates of the old city of Jerusalem .

Surname

The name "Herodestor" goes back to medieval pilgrims who believed that the house of Herodes Antipas , who according to the biblical description also interrogated Jesus ( Lk 23.6ff  EU ), was near this point.

history

During the siege of Jerusalem (1099) the crusaders managed to break through the wall at the site of Herod's gate, which led to the fall of Jerusalem. The gate is one of the newer city gates and was built in 1875 in place of a hatch from the time of Suleiman the Magnificent .

location

Near the northeast corner, the gate leads from the Muslim Quarter to the Arab residential areas of East Jerusalem in front of it . Opposite is the main Arab shopping street Salah-al-Din -Street with the post office. The gate is not as frequented as the Damascus Gate , as there are only residential buildings behind it, from which one can only get to the center of the old town via long inaccessible paths with steps. Nevertheless, a few Jewish families have settled near the gate with a high level of security.
