Michel Sabbah ( Arabic ميشيل صباح, DMG Mīšīl Ṣabbāḥ ; * March 19, 1933 in Nazareth ) is a Palestinian Catholic theologian and emeritus Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem .

Life

Sabbah attended the Frères des Ecoles Chrétiennes school in Nazareth and then (from 1943) the Latin Patriarchal Seminary in Bait Jala . On June 28, 1955, he was ordained a priest from Patriarch Alberto Gori in the Salesian Church in Nazareth . He then worked as a parish priest in Madaba / Jordan, since 1971 at the Christ the King Church in Amman . In 1973 he received his doctorate in Arabic philology from the Sorbonne , and from 1979 to 1987 he was President of the University of Bethlehem .

Along with other high Christian dignitaries in the Holy Land such as Munib Younan , he is one of the signatories of the so-called Kairos-Palestine Document of December 2009, in which the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories condemned as "sin before God" and the urgency of peace and justice for Palestine is remembered.

Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem

On 11 December 1987 appointed him John Paul II. To the Patriarch of Jerusalem and gave him personally consecrated bishop on January 6, 1988 at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In 2005 he received a coadjutor in the person of Archbishop Fouad Twal .

On March 19, 2008, he submitted his resignation from the office of Patriarch to the Vatican. On June 21, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. Sabbah's resignation due to reasons of age. The already appointed coadjutor Fouad Twal became his successor.

Since 1988 Sabbah has also been chairman of the "Catholic Family" in the Middle East Council of Churches . He is also chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Arab Region (CELERA) and Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor (since 2005). From 1999 to 2007 he was chairman of Pax Christi International.

Michel Sabbah was the first Palestinian to take the throne of the Latin Patriarch and has campaigned repeatedly for the cause of his people in the Palestinian conflict. Due to his political presence, but also because his Orthodox official brother Theophilos was in the meantime neither recognized by Israel nor by Jordan, Sabbah became one of the most important representatives of the Palestinian Christians .

As the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah was Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
