Pierbattista Pizzaballa
Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM (born April 21, 1965 in Cologno al Serio , Bergamo Province ) is an Italian religious, archbishop and apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem .
Life
Pierbattista Pizzaballa joined the order of the Franciscans on La Verna in 1984 . On September 7, 1985 he made his first and on October 14, 1989 his perpetual profession . After studying at the Pontificio Ateneo Antonianum , he was ordained a priest on September 15, 1990, and in 1990 was sent by his Italian religious province to study at the Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem . He also studied Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . From 1998 to 2004 he was professor for Biblical Hebrew and Judaism at the “Studium Biblicum Franciscanum” and at the “Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum”.
Between 2001 and 2004 he was superior of the monastery of St. Simeon and Anna in Jerusalem and led the community of Hebrew-speaking Catholics based there. From 2005 to 2008 he was Episcopal Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and responsible for the Hebrew-speaking Catholics in the Holy Land.
On May 15, 2004 he was elected Custodian of the Holy Land . He was ex officio President of the Associazione di Terra Santa / Association pro Terra Sancta (ATS), the Franciscan aid organization in the Holy Land. At the same time he is chairman of the commission for evangelization of the Custody of the Holy Land and a member of its commission for Judaism and Islam. During the time of turmoil in the Middle East , he was the custodian of the Franciscans and thus of many Catholic Christians in Israel, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Rhodes. In 2016 he handed over his position as curator to his brother Francesco Patton.
Pope Francis appointed him Titular Archbishop pro hac vice of Verbe and Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem on June 24, 2016 . His inauguration as Apostolic Administrator took place on July 15 of that year. On September 10, 2016, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches , Leonardo Sandri , donated him episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Patriarch Emeritus of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal , and the Bishop of Bergamo , Francesco Beschi .
Pierbattista Pizzaballa was invested in the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien on October 26, 2016 in Rome and appointed Pro-Grand Prior of the Papal Laity Order. Pizzaballa is Grand Cross Conventual Chaplain of the Order of Malta .
On May 31, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches .
