St. Peter in Gallicantu

The Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu (Latin: St. Peter to the cockcrow) is located on the eastern slope of Mount Zion in Jerusalem , south of the Old City . In 1888 , Assumptionist Fathers discovered the remains of an approximately 20 × 16 m Byzantine church from the 6th century, which had been renovated by the Crusaders .

The current church was consecrated in 1931 . The dome of the round church has a cross-shaped window. Mosaics show Jesus in front of the high council , the weeping Peter and various penitents. It recalls the denial of Peter after Jesus was arrested (Mt 26, 69-75; Lk 22, 56-62; Jn 18, 15-18.25-27).

Particularly noteworthy are the stairs that lead into the valley next to the church. Jesus probably used these stairs to walk to the Mount of Olives after the Last Supper . He is said to have been taken to the high priestly palace via the same staircase.
