Nevfel Cumart (born May 31, 1964 in Lingenfeld ) is a German writer , speaker , literary translator and journalist of Turkish descent.

Career

Nevfel Cumart grew up in Stade and attended the Vincent-Lübeck-Gymnasium there . After graduating from high school in 1984, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . From the winter semester 1986/1987 he studied Turkish , Arabic , Iranian and Islamic studies at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg . Since 1993 he has been working as a freelance writer, speaker, translator and journalist. He lives in Bamberg.

His first of eighteen volumes of poetry was published in 1983. He has received several prizes and awards. In addition to volumes of poetry, Cumart has published a collection of short stories, numerous prose articles, articles and literary essays in various anthologies and specialist publications. Some of his poems have been translated into Polish, Russian, Danish and Greek, two volumes of poetry have been published in two languages ​​in German-English, and two more in German-Turkish. He has translated works by Turkish authors by Yaşar Kemal , Aziz Nesin , Fazil Hüsnü Daglarca , Celil Oker and Yaşar Nuri Öztürk into German.

Cumart has headed the literary department of the Bamberg city magazine “Fränkische Nacht” since 1992 and is a freelancer in the features section of the daily newspapers “Fränkischer Tag” and “Nürnberger Nachrichten”. He gives lectures and leads seminars on various topics relating to Turkish studies, migration in Germany and the religion of Islam. His reading and lecture trips have taken him abroad several times (including England, Ireland, Turkey, Switzerland, Poland).

Cumart is the 1st chairman of the New Society for Literature Erlangen e. V. (NGL), member of the PEN Center Germany , the European authors' association DIE KOGGE , the Rotary Club Bamberg-Domreiter and on the board of the Association of German Writers (VS), Regional Group Upper Franconia. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Georges Anawati Foundation for the Promotion of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue .
