Yaşar Nuri Öztürk (born February 5, 1951 in Bayburt , Bayburt Province , † June 22, 2016 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish religious philosopher , author, lawyer, and politician. He was a well-known Islamic theologian in Turkey and represented liberal positions within Islam .

Scientific career and interpretation of the Koran

Öztürk studied law and Islamic theology at Ankara University . He then worked as an imam and preacher for 12 years . He then returned to university for a PhD in Islamic philosophy in 1980 . In 1986 he became a docent and taught in 1986/87 "Islamic Intellectual History" at Unification Theological Seminary in Barrytown, 130 km north of New York City . From 1993 to 2002 he was dean of the theological faculty at Istanbul University . In addition to his work as a book author, he had a column in the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet . He has given lectures in the USA , Switzerland , Germany and countries in the Middle East .

Öztürk's books Islam in the Koran and The Falsified Islam on a contemporary interpretation of the Koran were very well received by the Turkish public, so that they are considered key works of a “movement back to the Koran”. Öztürk was subsequently called an “Islamic reformer ”, although he himself declared that the Koran and Islam did not need reform, and he saw himself as the successor to Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Muhammad Abduh . According to the Koran, Öztürk considered the mind to be the "greatest prophet". In the Koran, dogmas are kept to a minimum. The Koran urges one to use one's mind and to interpret the religious sources. Religious belief bases should be critically questioned and brought into harmony with the requirements of the modern present.

In the list of the “most important people of the 20th century” by Time Magazine , Öztürk was voted 7th among the top ten personalities in the category “Most Important Scientists and Thinkers” in 2000. Some of his books have been translated into German and English.

In 2002, Öztürk was as MP for the constituency Istanbul Province of Republican People's Party ( Republican People's Party ) in the Turkish parliament voted. In 2005 he left the CHP and founded the Halkın Yükselişi Partisi ( Party for the Rise of the People ) in Ankara on February 16, 2005 , which he chaired for some time.
