The master's thesis is a scientific piece of work that has to be written in order to complete a degree with the master’s degree .
Preparation and rank of the master's thesis
The exact administrative, content and formal requirements for the preparation of a master’s thesis differ from university to university and result from the respective examination regulations. Usually the topic of the thesis is chosen by the candidate himself and worked on in four to six months. Common formal requirements are: a length of 60–120 pages, A4 format, bound form, pagination , bibliography , table of contents as well as an affirmation in lieu of oath , stating that the work was done by yourself and with identification of the quotations and sources used ( has not submitted any plagiarism ). After the work has been assessed by two professors or lecturers , usually a written exam and always an oral exam, the author of the work is awarded the academic degree Magister Artium (MA for short). In Germany, it is traditionally based on the family name , in Austria the degree is Magister (Mag. for short) before the family name.
A copy of the bound master’s thesis remains in the possession of the university and is usually kept there - albeit often under lock and key - in the departmental library of the respective faculty .
The master's thesis corresponds to a diploma thesis or a master's thesis .
Germany and Switzerland
In Germany and Switzerland, it is determined for each course whether a diploma or a master's thesis is to be written. Master's theses are usually intended for humanities, diploma theses for engineering and natural science subjects. Since a master’s course is usually a two- or three-subject course, the thesis is written in the first or only major subject. In the second major or both minor subjects, only an oral and / or a written exam is required to complete the degree.
Over the next few years, the master’s degree programs in Germany will be gradually replaced nationwide by bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as part of the Bologna process . This also means a change in the requirements for the thesis.
Austria
In Austria were called in the context of the Bologna Process newly introduced studies in Germany and Switzerland as a Master's degree programs are called, master's programs . The scientific papers to be written within the framework of these studies were accordingly called master’s theses. Theses that are to be written within the framework of traditional diploma courses are called diploma theses regardless of the subject of the course . The existing master’s programs were renamed to master’s programs in mid-2006, and master’s theses are now to be written instead of the master’s theses.
