history
The Donnersbach valley was already settled by the Romans ( Donnersbacher Römerstein ). Rudolf Wernbacher gives a possible explanation about the origin of the place name:
“… Wuotanesouwa, Donaresouwa, Donnersbachau. A meadow sacred to the old German god " Wotan , Donar ".
In 1344 all estate, fiefdom, court, bailiwick and forest of Hartneid von Kchranichberg were sold to Prince Duke Albrecht II in Austria . Duke Albrecht II suddenly became interested in Donnersbach and bought up everything that was available there. In 1346 Albrecht gave everything he had acquired to the Gaming monastery in Lower Austria . This is how the Donnersbach dominion came into being, which had a fortification that was later expanded to become Donnersbach Castle. This fortification became the center of the administration and the court. Until the 13th century, the Ennstal formed a unified judicial district - the seat was in Selva . 1346 was separated from Wolkenstein by a charter from Duke Albrechts Donnersbach. For the Donnersbach Regional Court, the gallows stood in the Poscha on the left side of the stream. In 1530 the Donnersbach dominion was sold to Achatz Schrott, Edler and Ritter zu Kindberg to raise the tax. In 1764, Count Maria Corbinian von Saurau bought the heavily indebted rule. In 1770, 599 male and 614 female souls belonged to the Donnersbach rulership. In 1783, Karl Graf von Stainach finally bought the territory. In 1799, the entire rule was sold to the Innerberger Main Union.
From the 17th to the 19th century, mining was carried out in Donnersbach, mainly for gold, silver, zinc and lead. In 1666 a hammer mill was founded. A school was founded in 1774, the building of which did not follow until 1784. Between 1870 and 1951 the post office, music band, volunteer fire brigades Donnersbach and Erlsberg, Raiffeisenkasse, swimming pool, tourist association and the first ski lift on the Planneralm were founded .
In 1848, the year of the peasants' liberation, the subservience between peasants and rulers was abolished. The Innerberg main union could no longer collect taxes. However, it retained private property and some rights that were still disputed for a long time.
The former bathroom
As evidenced by the Donnersbacher Römerstein , there must have been a healing spring in Donnersbach as early as Roman times.
Several old records mention a "wild bath", which was located directly opposite the Donnersbach Castle on the slope of the Erlsberg in the immediate vicinity of the so-called "Kreuzerkeusche", describe the properties of the sulfur-containing spring and report that the bathing hut was torn away by a flood disaster and no more had been built.
In fact, Georg Matthäus Vischer's “Topographia Ducatus Stiriae” from 1681 on sheet 56 shows a small house with the heading “Das Baad” in the illustration of Donnersbach Castle on the lower left across the bridge at the foot of the Erlsberg. In the background the - then still existing - Aegydikirche (see ruins Aegydikirche ) on the Ilgenberg can be seen.
There is also news about former spa guests:
- Abbot Valentin von Admont visited the bath between 1555 and 1567 to relieve his headache.
- The abbess Florentina Putterer from Göss (1576 to 1602) traveled to this bath. The Puttererschloss and the Putterer See in Aigen in the Ennstal still remember her family name .
- In 1618, Hans Wilhelm von Saurau, Hans Friedrich von Stainach and the Lords von Racknitz and Zinzendorf stayed there for the cure, and finally in 1682 the Admont professor P. Romanus Vukovic.
According to a handwritten note from the director Karl Reiterer (at the time senior teacher in Donnersbachwald) in the Donnersbach municipal office - with reference to a report by Pastor F. Preis from 1810 - the connected municipalities of Erlsberg and Ilgenberg are said to be hit by a heavy downpour in around 1799 which is apparently also the cause of the destruction of the wild bath.
Berta Runge observed that fifty paces away a strip of terrain on the back of the so-called “inner” Erlsberg remains almost snow-free (“aper”) during the winter months, a phenomenon that apparently contributed to the fact that the thermal baths, which were documented and later buried, closed again drilling, but so far with no results.
coat of arms
Lightning flashes from a red field ( = thunder ) into a blue field ( = stream , water), hence the name Donnersbach
Tourism & Economy
Donnersbach is shaped by tourism by the highest ski village in Styria, the Planneralm . In summer there are hikes, including through the Klammsteig and to the mountains of the Wölzer Tauern. A fitness trail and the sports center complete the offer.
The economy is characterized by tourist facilities and small businesses.
Culture and sights
- Donnersbach Castle : The castle building, which was built around 1560, may once have served as a hunting lodge for Duke Albrecht and his successors. In a report from around 1620, Susanne von Saurau reports that Donnersbach Castle was built by her grandfather. Before that there was a fortification; The castle was given its present form, without a church, in 1589. In 1714 a heavy earthquake shook the castle. In 1786 the church was built. In 1847 the castle and the castle archway with its two-story corridor and the rectory received the same plastering. 1964 was the last restoration to date. A steep path leads to the heavy gate of the castle entrance. On it you can see the double-headed eagle and the Saurausche coat of arms with the bear. In the inner courtyard there is a cast of the Donnersbach Roman stone found in the floor of the castle .
- Catholic parish church Donnersbach hl. Aegydius
- Aegydikirche ruins: The Donnersbachtal belonged to the Irdning parish in 1230. The church consecrated to St. Aegydius (patron saint of merchants) is mentioned for the first time in 1357. It was built - in the Romanesque style - probably earlier, probably in the 13th century. The area was about 150 m², the orientation of the church was from west to east. There were three windows on each of the long sides and a turret in the middle of the roof.
- Donnersbachklamm : First construction of the Klammsteig in 1936 by expanding the Triftsteig, which has been around for centuries. After the path later fell into disrepair, the innkeeper Siegfried Leitner earned great merit in the new construction in 1982. In 1991 the Donnersbachklamm was declared a natural monument.
The Trift
The "Trift" was a dangerous job; once the rake broke, the whole valley was flooded.
Gradually, however, the beauty of this wild valley gorge was discovered alongside work and the now expanded Triftsteig was opened to visitors in 1936. Due to the construction of the road to Donnersbachwald and car traffic, the Trift trade had become uneconomical. The last drift took place in 1961 and in 1962 the rake was removed. But the Triftsteig was rebuilt as a Klammsteig and repeatedly improved.

Donnersbach - the flower village
In 2005, Donnersbach was voted the most beautiful flower village in Styria . In addition to the elaborate and beautifully designed flower arrangements, it is also thanks to the numerous children and youth projects that helped Donnersbach win in this category.
In 2006 Donnersbach was named the most beautiful flower village in Austria . The 2006 award was the motivation to apply for the European Village 2007. For this title not only great commitment to flower arrangements is necessary, the development of the village in recent years as well as numerous projects are also used.
