history

Nothing is known about the establishment of the Irdning market due to the lack of documents. Probably the sovereign gave the first settlers land in exchange for an annual interest. Over the years, these estates passed into hereditary possession ( farms ). The owners of such farms were the lords von Irdning mentioned in documents .

The name Irdning ( Idenich, Ydnich ) is mentioned for the first time in the list of documents of the Admont Abbey from 1140. The name goes back to the old Slavic jedb (wildness, anger), because the Irdningbach is a raging torrent. In 1145 the parish church is mentioned on the occasion of a donation to the Admont Abbey in connection with a Muccolf de Ideniche .

Like the name Altirdning , the place name Irdning comes from Slavic. Market rights were granted to Irdning in 1564 at the request of the owner of the Selva Lordship (Ferdinand Hoffmann). Since 1689 the seat of the district court of Selva has been in Irdning. The political community Irdning was established in 1850.

religion

One of the most important pastors of Irdning was Aeneas Silvio Piccolomini from Siena. He was pastor of Irdning from 1455 to 1458 and was elected Pope as Pius II on August 27, 1458 .

Culture and sights

  • Parish and Dean Church of St. Peter and Paul: first mentioned in a document in 1145. The predominantly Gothic parish church is the St. Dedicated to Peter and Paul. The central importance of these two patron saints is reflected in the high altar painting, a typical example of baroque sacred art by Philipp Carl Laubmann from Graz from 1752. It depicts the kiss of peace between the two patrons who say goodbye to each other before their martyrdom in Rome. The church also has a number of remarkable altars in the side chapels and a rosary brotherhood altar with a remarkable altar painting, which was created in 1640 by Andreas Sterz, an artist from Admont Abbey .
The death shields of the Welsersheimb family are also remarkable . Outside the church is the war memorial for the 105 Irdningen victims of the First World War, as well as the 167 victims of the Second World War, whereby at least the victims from Aigen in the Ennstal are listed for those who fell in the Second World War .
  • Capuchin monastery and church of St. Joseph : built in 1615 by Hans Praunfalk as a hunting lodge on the site of a farm. A Capuchin monastery since 1711.
  • Kalvarienbergkirche, 18th century
  • Chapel on the road to Aigen, 18th century
  • Former place of execution with gallows chapel, 16th or 17th century
  • Gumpenstein Castle : built in 1616 by the builder Moritz von Stainach, later the residence of the Count Welsersheimb family , barons of Gumpenstein. Today the higher federal teaching and research institute Raumberg-Gumpenstein is in the castle.
  • Falkenhof: Former hunting lodge of the Mayr-Melnhof family , from the end of the 19th century. It later became a hotel and restaurant.
  • Stegmüllnerhaus in Falkenberg, former mill, 17th century
  • Irdning sculpture region with wood and stone sculptures by national and international artists

Sports

Irdning has an excellent sports facility, which is regularly used by soccer teams for training purposes. In the past, Real Madrid (2008 for the 4th time), Red Bull Salzburg , AS Roma , VfB Stuttgart , FC Schalke 04 (2011) and other teams from Germany and abroad held their training camps in Irdning. Thousands of onlookers come every time to request autographs from the players and watch the training.

In the immediate vicinity of Irdning there are several ski areas, including the Planneralm (the highest ski area in Styria), the Riesneralm and the Tauplitzalm . Further winter sports opportunities are given by cross-country skiing trails and ice stock sport . In summer the golf course of the Hotel Schloss Pichlarn can be used. There are swimming opportunities in summer at the local artificial swimming pond and at the Putterersee in neighboring Aigen in the Ennstal . Irdning also has a beach volleyball court, a tennis facility, two riding schools, an inline skate track, an athletics track and an asphalt curling rink.

Every year in summer there is a 12- or 24-hour charity run, which also counts as the Austrian championship.
