The Putterersee is an approximately 13 hectare lake near Aigen im Ennstal in Styria , Austria . It has a length of 0.5 km, a width of 0.3 km, a depth of 6 to 8 m, although the exact depth varies because the ground is very swampy. It is located at an altitude of 650  m above sea level. A. It is known for its excellent water quality, which it owes to the predominantly boggy ground.

The Putterersee is privately owned. In the summer months the bathing facility is chargeable and offers windsurfing , among other things . A campsite is also available. In winter you can ice skating, ice hockey or curling with free admission when the temperature is right.

At the end of the Second World War, this lake served as a “dismantling place”. Various war material, uniforms and weapons were disposed of in the lake in front of the approaching Allied forces.

History of fishing

Fishing in the Putterersee has been the sole responsibility of the sovereign since the Middle Ages . Since the people in the area fished in it anyway, the lake was almost completely fished out by the middle of the 15th century. On August 9, 1447, the future Emperor Friedrich III. in Wiener Neustadt that his lake at Irdning (also called Tangelsee) "has been desolated with vischen vast and in other ways damaging it", and left the lake to his keeper at Selva and Landrichter im Ennstal, Andree Reichenegger, for sole use , "So that the same lake was contradicted and kept usable".

The lake probably came to the Aigen estate around 1600, when the new Friedstein lordship arose from a large part of the Reichenegger estate in the Ennstal . The fishing rights in the Putterersee were divided. The rulership of the putterer from 1666 already noted the right to fish and catch crabs on the southern side of the lake as far as the Meiergrund stretch. The same was in the Dominikalurbar of the rule in 1796. The Fischer family purchased the rest of the fishing water on the Putterersee including the lake itself around 1840, and in 1843 the lake and fishing rights went to the Keller family. A fish overseer had been appointed at the lake since around 1890, and fishing was reserved for house guests of the Dornbusch family. The Irdning fishing club has held its district championship in sport fishing on the lake repeatedly since the 1980s. The public was allowed to fish in the mid-1990s, with the lake's fish population today being rated as medium to good.
