history

On the rocky ridge of the "Purgstallhöhe" stood a fortified complex in the Middle Ages: the Grauscharn Castle (also Gruscharn, Slav. Grusch = rubble). Already in 1160 Margrave Ottokar III. In this his Pfalzburg, the center of power for the County of Ennstal, a certificate was issued. The Johanneskapelle was probably part of the castle complex. The parish, the parish of which reached far beyond Aussee , is also very old; the church and castle on the castle stables are attested in 1183 . Initially, Pürgg was the seat of archdeacons (archpriests). In 1490 the parish came to the St. George Knights , in 1599 to the Jesuits of Graz .

Pürgg (place)

The picturesque village of Pürgg, known by Peter Rosegger as the “Kripperl of Styria”, is located on a small plateau in the southern slopes of the Rantenstein, about 150 m above the valley floor of the Grimmingbach. The place consists of a few narrow streets that are largely kept car-free. There the houses crowd around two churches - remarkably both built around the time in the 12th century.

  • Parish church of St. George, presumably inaugurated on July 17, 1130: The three-aisled Romanesque church is still preserved in its basic structure, but was designed in Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th century .
  • Johanneskapelle : The Romanesque chapel is located on the eastern edge of the plateau on a beautiful vantage point over the Ennstal. This chapel is famous for its valuable frescoes from the 12th century, which are among the most beautiful and best preserved in Europe.
Place and castle Trautenfels, church ruins Neuhaus

The village of Trautenfels is a small settlement around Trautenfels Castle , located directly on the Enns .

The castle is located on a small hill that towers over the valley floor by about 30 m. It was first mentioned as a castle in 1261. Friedrich von Trauttmannsdorf gave it its present appearance in the Baroque period . Today it is owned by the Province of Styria and is used as a museum and exhibition center as part of the Landesmuseum Joanneum . It houses, among other things, a landscape and folklore museum.

A few meters west of the castle, on the same ridge, are the ruins of the Neuhaus Protestant church. At the time of the Reformation, this was the most important religious center in the upper Ennstal. The church was built by the lords of the castle in Trautenfels. But it soon fell victim to the destruction caused by the Counter Reformation . In 1991 the remains of the building were uncovered and set up as a memorial.

economy

Trautenfels Castle and the picturesque village of Pürgg attract numerous tourists and day trippers. The area is also popular with mountaineers who set off from here on mountain tours on the Grimming , the Dead Mountains and the Niedere Tauern mountains to the south . In Wörschachwald there is a small winter sports area and the Spechtensee , a popular excursion destination.

The most important business operations are numerous inns and accommodation providers.

traffic

Pürgg has a stop on the Salzkammergut Railway . The stop of the Ennstalbahn in Trautenfels was closed in 2007. There is an important road junction in Trautenfels. This is where the main connection route from Salzburg to Graz ( Ennstal Straße B 320) meets Salzkammergutstraße B 145 into the Salzkammergut .

education

The Unterburg primary school was inaugurated on May 5, 1907 after a year of construction. The property including the orchard was a donation from Countess Anna Lamberg, who had also donated the Unterburg retirement home a few years earlier.
