BW

Stainach is a former market town with 1943 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2013) in Styria in the judicial district of Liezen , district of Liezen . Since January 1, 2015, it has been merged with the former municipality of Pürgg-Trautenfels under the name " Stainach-Pürgg " as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform .

The place is a railway junction (Stainach-Irdning station), here the Salzkammergutbahn meets the Ennstalbahn .

geography

Stainach is located in the Ennstal in the Austrian state of Styria .

Community structure

The former municipal area comprised the following two localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Niederhofen (60)
  • Stainach (1884)

The community consisted of the cadastral community of Stainach.

history

A Hiltigrims von Gruscharn is first mentioned in a document around 1195. The village "Gruscharn" was called from 1659 Stainach. The Stainach family was raised to the rank of count in the 18th century. The abolition of the manors took place in 1848. The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850.

The construction of the Ennstalbahn in 1875 and the Ausseerbahn in 1877 opened up the former community. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the former municipality became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria. Since 1958 the place has also been the seat of its own parish.

Stainach is passed down - but not with complete certainty - as the birthplace of the Salian Pope Gregory V (972–999); his parents are said to have owned a mansion there.

politics

Mayor is Gernot Schweiger (SPÖ). After the elections in 2010, the municipal council was composed as follows: 6 ÖVP , 8 SPÖ , 1 FPÖ

Coat of arms of the former municipality

The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from April 1, 1985.

The municipal coat of arms shows "a step pyramid of three carved silver stones in the red shield".
