Career

After graduating from the Franziskanergymnasium in Bozen in 1917, Huter took part in the First World War as an Kaiserjäger . He then studied history and German at the Universities of Innsbruck , Freiburg im Breisgau and Vienna , graduating with a Dr. phil. in Innsbruck 1923. As a doctor of history, Huter became a member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research and volunteer at the Tyrolean Provincial Government Archives in Innsbruck. From 1928–1941 he worked as an archivist at the Vienna House, Court and State Archives . From 1934 on he was a member of the Austrofascist Patriotic Front . From 1940 to 1945 he worked on behalf of the SS-Ahnenerbes as an archivist and officer for archive protection in South Tyrol , whereby he increasingly approached an "ethno-political (n) perspective" in the sense of the National Socialist understanding of science. Huter joined the NSDAP on July 1, 1940 ( membership number 8.225.291).

As early as 1938, Huter had completed his habilitation for Austrian history in Vienna; In 1941 he was appointed associate professor for the history of the Alpine region and economic history at the University of Innsbruck (then the German Alpine University ), where he was appointed university professor in 1958. In 1966, Huter retired, but remained the honorary director of the university archive he set up until 1983. Since 1959, Huter was also a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences ; he was also the president of the Altkaiserjägerklub am Bergisel in Innsbruck.

plant

Huter was a historian, university professor and editor who precisely prepared the historical sources. In his representations, he is above all heralding a myth of the Tyrolean homeland corresponding to the rulers of his time .
