Origin and development

The Tyrolean homeland is a direct reflection of the division of historical Tyrol as a result of the First World War. As a yearbook for history and folklore, the Tyrolean homeland should offer cross-border scholars the opportunity to present their historical and ethnological studies on Tyrolean regional history. In South Tyrol , which had become Italian in 1919, the regional history journal Der Schlern was founded in 1920 with a similar intention ; analogous to this, the folklorist Hermann Wopfner, who teaches at the University of Innsbruck, wanted to document the lost historical unity of the country with the Tyrolean homeland . This initially led, reinforced by the systematic Italianization of South Tyrol under fascism , to a markedly apologetic and sometimes German-national tone of the magazine, which was already expressed in the title with its conservative recourse to the romantic concept of home, which is rooted in the Heimat movement . After the "annexation" of Austria to the German Empire, the Tyrolean homeland was no longer allowed to appear, since its position on the South Tyrolean question ran counter to the new rulers. It was not continued until 1947 with Volume 11.

The Tiroler Heimat was initially published one to three times a year and has been published as a yearbook since the post-war period. Historians from all parts of historic Tyrol and from neighboring countries publish in it. Hermann Wopfner, who died in 1963, was followed by Franz Huter , Fridolin Dörrer, Josef Riedmann and Richard Schober as editors . Christina Antenhofer and Richard Schober are the current editors. Characteristic is the close cooperation between the archive and university research, which is expressed in the composition of the editorial team and in the strong source-based nature of the contributions. The "Tiroler Heimat" now sees itself as a traditional scientific magazine devoted to the history and culture of the historic region of Tyrol. For almost a hundred years, the journal has published current scientific research on the history of Tyrol. The focus has now expanded and now includes, in the broadest sense, contributions to the history and culture of North, East and South Tyrol. Methodical and content diversity as well as a high scientific standard, which would like to embed national and regional history in a supra-regional, European framework, characterize the way of working.

In addition to articles on regional history, the annual volumes contain mishaps, obituaries and reviews of regional publications from and about Tyrol, with the main focus on historical works.
