Schnals ([ ʃnals ]; Italian Senales ) is an Italian municipality with 1245 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in South Tyrol . The community extends over a large part of the Schnalstal and the surrounding mountain areas.

geography

The municipality of Schnals, with 210.35 km² the third largest municipality in South Tyrol in terms of area, is located in the Schnalstal , a side valley of the Vinschgau , which is drained by the Schnalser Bach . It encompasses almost the entire valley (with the exception of the valley entrance area), several side valleys such as the Pfossental and the surrounding mountain areas. There are three villages in Schnals: Karthaus ( 1323  m ), Katharinaberg ( 1245  m ) and Unser Frau ( 1500  m ). The Vernagt reservoir ( 1689  m ) extends above Unser Frau next to the small settlement Vernagt , the highest village is Kurzras ( 2011  m ) in the valley head.

The valley is surrounded by numerous three-thousand-meter peaks of the Ötztal Alps , which are assigned to various subgroups. On the west side is the Saldurkamm , in which, for example, the Schwemserspitze ( 3459  m ), the Lagaunspitze ( 3438  m ) and the Mastaunspitze ( 3200  m ) rise. On the north side, Schnals is bordered by the heavily glaciated Schnalskamm , which is part of the main Alpine ridge and the Italian-Austrian border with the state of Tyrol . The most important peaks here include the Hintere Schwärze ( 3624  m ), the Similaun ( 3599  m ), the Fineilspitze ( 3514  m ) and the Hochwilde ( 3480  m ). The Texel group rises to the east with peaks such as the Roteck ( 3337  m ), the Texelspitze ( 3318  m ) and the Hochweiß ( 3281  m ).

The Texel Group and large parts of the Schnalskamm are protected in the Texel Group Nature Park .
