Prad am Stilfserjoch ([ praˑt ]; Italian : Prato allo Stelvio ) is an Italian municipality with 3646 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Vinschgau in South Tyrol around 20 kilometers west of Schlanders .
geography
The municipality of Prad is located in the Vinschgau in the west of South Tyrol. All three village settlements in the municipality (Prad, Agums, Lichtenberg) are lined up on the orographically right side of the Adige Valley . The main town Prad ( 915 m ) is at the exit of the Sulden Valley . Prad is crossed by the Suldenbach , which flows a little northeast of the main town into the Etsch .
The entrance area of the Sulden Valley, which belongs to Prad, is surmounted on both sides by ridges that are part of the Ortler Alps and are protected in the Stilfserjoch National Park . At Piz Chavalatsch ( 2763 m , counted towards the Fallasch ridge ) in the far west, the municipality touches the Italian-Swiss border with the canton of Graubünden . In the south, towering over the slopes of the Nördersberg , Prad finds its highest point on the Tschenglser Hochwand ( 3375 m ; counted among the Lasa mountains ).
climate
The climate in Prad is temperate. In summer the temperatures rise to 30 degrees and more. In winter, the temperature can drop to −10 to −15 degrees on clear, windless nights. Most of the precipitation falls in summer and autumn. On average there is between 600 and 700 mm of precipitation per year.
Surname
According to the current version of the official Prad village book, the name comes from the Latin word “prata”, which means “meadows” in German.

traffic
For motor traffic , Prad is made accessible by the SS 38 , which crosses the main town of the municipality and from here climbs via the Sulden and Trafoital to the Stilfser Joch . The Spondinig train station of the Vinschgau Railway is also located in the municipality .
