Kuens ([ kuə̯ns ]; Italian Caines ) is an Italian municipality in South Tyrol in Passeier near Merano with 386 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
Kuens - with an area of only 1.66 km² the smallest municipality in South Tyrol - is located in the Burggrafenamt in Vorderpasseier or in the lower Passeier Valley . The municipality is located on the orographic right , western side of the valley above the exit of the Sprons valley . The Passer and Spronser Bach form the southern and western municipal boundaries. The small village center is located on a terrace at a height of around 560 m in the immediate vicinity of Riffian . Above this, the municipality on the eastern slope of the Texel Group , which is part of the Ötztal Alps , reaches a height of just over 1200 m .
history
The current parish church in Kuens dates back to the Romanesque period and is dedicated to St. Mauritius and St. Korbinian (the coat of arms shows Korbinian, who founded a monastery near Kuens, on his hike with the bear towards Rome). Kuens belonged to the judicial district of Merano until the end of the First World War and was part of the district of Merano .
politics
Kuens is the only municipality in South Tyrol without its own town hall. The political organs and the administration also use the Riffian town hall, which is located in the immediate vicinity .
