The District Burggrafenamt ( Italian Comunità Comprensoriale Burgraviato ) was founded 1971st Originally the district community comprised 23 communities , in 1973 the communities Partschins, Plaus and Naturns joined and in 1986 the city of Merano. The 26 communities ( St. Felix and Our Lady in the Forest merged in 1974) extend over an area of ​​1,101 km² with around 100,000 inhabitants (as of 2014) in the actual Burggrafenamt as well as in adjacent areas such as the Deutschnonsberg and the lower Vinschgau . The capital is Meran .

In the census, around 77% of the residents of the Burgrave Office stated that they use German as a colloquial language. Around 22.69% were Italian-speaking, most of them live in Merano . Outside of Merano, 6% in the Burgraviato Office spoke Italian.

The tourist associations of the Burggrafenamt district community have joined forces with the Schnalstal tourist association to form the Meraner Land holiday region .
