Plaus ( also Plaus in Italian ) is an Italian municipality with 737 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in South Tyrol , located in Vinschgau on the Adige river to the west of Merano .

geography

Plaus is located in the lower Vinschgau . Due to its proximity to Merano , the municipality is not assigned to the Vinschgau district community , but to the Burggrafenamt district community . The small village center is 519 m above sea level on the orographic right- hand side in the broad valley floor of the Adige Valley . Only a narrow strip of territory extends over to the opposite side of the Adige . To the south of the valley floor, the municipality rises over the slopes of the Nördersberg to the ridge of the Vigiljoch , the northeasternmost branch of the access ridge of the Ortler Alps . There Plaus am Rauhen Bichl reaches its highest point at 2018 m .

history

Plaus is first mentioned around 1170 as "de Palude" and then in 1227 as "Palus" ( Latin for swamp). In 1391 the German-language form "pharr ze Pallaus" (Parish Plaus) appears. The municipality belonged to the judicial district of Merano until the end of the First World War and was part of the district of Merano .
