The Meran district was a political district in the Fürstete Grafschaft Tirol . The district comprised areas around the city of Meran , which was also the seat of the district administration. The area was added to Italy after the First World War .

The modern, political districts of the Habsburg Monarchy were created in 1868 when the political and judicial administration was separated.

The Meran district was formed in 1868 from the five judicial districts Meran , Glurns , Lana , Passeier and Schlanders .

On October 1st, the judicial districts of Schlanders and Glurns were removed from the Meran district and elevated to the status of Silandro district.

The district lived 55,014 people in 1869, with the district housing 7,224 homes and covering 41.66 square miles.

The district covered an area of ​​1031.05 km² after the elimination of the district of Schlanders in 1910 and housed a population of 55,619 people, of which 49,168 had German , 1,669 Italian or Ladin and 4,782 indicated another language as a colloquial language or were foreigners.

The district consisted of three judicial districts at the end of October 1916.

Due to the border regulations of the Treaty of Saint-Germain , which was signed on September 10, 1919 , the Meran district was completely slammed into Italy.
