Margreid an der Weinstrasse ([ marˈgraɪ̯t ]; Italian Magrè sulla Strada del Vino ) is an Italian municipality with 1281 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the South Tyrolean lowlands .

The structural appearance of the place reveals its rural character. Fruit growing and viticulture still play an important role in Margreid, which is crossed by the South Tyrolean Wine Route .

geography

View of the center of Margreid

The municipality of Margreid, a total of 13.86 km², is about the same distance from Bolzano and Trento in the Unterland , a section of the Adige Valley in the south of South Tyrol. The community center (210- 240  m slm ) is located on the west, right bank side of the valley on the flat of the alluvial Fenner Bach . The section of the valley floor belonging to Margreid extends to the Adige and borders the areas of the neighboring communities Neumarkt , Kurtatsch , Kurtinig , Salurn and Roverè della Luna .

Immediately southwest of the community center rises the Fennberg , a plateau mountain in front of the Mendelkamm (part of the Nonsberg group ). The Fennberg, the Geier to the southeast and the Salurner Klause are the southern border between South Tyrol and Trentino and thus also between the German and Italian-speaking areas. While the northern half of the Fennberg high plateau belongs to Kurtatsch, the southern part with the scattered courtyards of Unterfennberg and the Fennberger See ( 1034  m ) is located in the municipality of Margreid.

Population development

history

Margreid is first mentioned in 1181 as "Magretum" . In 1215 today's Italian name "Magre" appears in the documents. Names from which the current German place name probably comes from ( "Margrid" and "Margreit" ) were first mentioned in 1292. The name "Margreid" in its modern form is first attested in 1409.

The first written entry on the Margreider parish church dates from 1343, and in 1370 the same is expanded. In 1513/14 the tower of the parish church was raised by two floors, in 1526/30 the richly decorated "spoonbill" bells were cast, of which only the big bell hangs in the tower today. At the beginning of the 16th century, styles of the South German Gothic were still used in the old parish church, a little later the Renaissance from the south influenced the architectural style. The current parish church of Margreid was built in 1681 because the previous building offered too little space for the growing community (the Gothic church was demolished, the parish church was consecrated to St. Gertraud ). In 1612 the parish seat of St. Florian, which was on the other side of the Adige (today the municipality of Neumarkt ), was moved to Margreid. In 1774, under the direction of Ing. Zallinger drained the valley floor and made it fertile. In 1779 Margreid and Kurtatsch were judicially united with Tramin and given to Count Zenobio as a fief. In 1895, Karl Felderer , the composer of the Bozen mountaineering song , was born in Margreid . In 1968 the municipality was given the coat of arms : The shield colors correspond to the coat of arms of the formerly resident family “Ob der Platten”, the horn already appears in the municipality seal from 1780. The patron saint of Margreid is St. Gertraud, so the church consecration day falls on March 17th.

Margreid belonged to the County of Tyrol and thus to Austria-Hungary until the end of the First World War . Within Tyrol, Margreid was assigned to the judicial district of Kaltern until 1913 , then to the judicial district of Neumarkt ; both were again part of the Bozen district . With the Treaty of Saint-Germain , Margreid came to Italy in 1920, along with most of Tyrol south of the main Alpine ridge . When the two provinces of Bolzano and Trento were established in these formerly Austrian areas in 1927, Margreid, like some other surrounding communities, was added to the predominantly Italian-speaking province of Trento. It was not until 1948 that Margreid was incorporated into the province of Bozen or South Tyrol.

climate

With an average annual temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius, the Adige Valley in South Tyrol is a veritable island of warmth, as demonstrated by the spontaneous sub-Mediterranean vegetation and planted subtropical species. Even the January average temperature doesn't go below freezing. On an annual average, five cold days (on which the temperature remains below freezing point) are more than outweighed by around a hundred summer days (with temperatures above 25 degrees). Most of the precipitation falls between the months of May and June and in autumn (around 800 millimeters annually in the valley, almost 1000 in the Unterfennberg fraction).

education

There is a German-speaking primary school in Margreid . This is connected to the school district of the neighboring municipality of Neumarkt. The school is located in the Salvadori Palais, a former estate of Countess Adele Crivelli. The stately palace from 1770 was converted into a school building with financial support from the Province of Bolzano.

tourism

Although tourism in South Tyrol is now one of the most important branches of the economy, it never really caught on in Margreid. In recent years, there has even been a slight decrease in both the number of beds and the number of arrivals. However, the deterioration in tourism is probably not only due to the limited number of commercial establishments, but above all to insufficient supply of private rooms and insufficient tourist infrastructure.

Attractions

The location on the language border also causes southern style influences in the architecture - curved alleys, archways and buildings as well as Gothic bay windows , seven stone village fountains and stone-framed arched windows with wrought-iron bars illustrate this. The oldest dated grapevine in Europe (1601) near the Augustin House in Grafengasse is still bearing fruit. It is designated as a natural monument .

Buildings

  • Birthplace of Karl Felderer , author of the South Tyrolean homeland song " The world is so big and wide "
  • Parish Church St. Gertraud: The church tower and the nave are separated from each other by the Pfarrgasse.

traffic

For motor traffic , Margreid is primarily accessible through Weinstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse, which pass close to the village center. Where the municipality reaches the Adige, it is crossed by the A22 . The Brennerbahn runs parallel to the motorway and offers an access point at the Margreid-Kurtatsch train station .
