The Geier or Geiersberg ( Italian Monte Alto or Monte di Salorno ) is a 1084 m high mountain in the Fiemme Valley Alps .
Location and surroundings
The vulture is located in the extreme south of South Tyrol ( Italy ) southwest of the Salurner center on the border of Trentino . Together with the opposite Fennberg , it forms the Salurner Klause section of the Adige Valley , which represents both the South Tyrolean state border and the German-Italian language border. On its northern and western sides, the Geier slopes down towards the Adige Valley with steep flanks. The Haderburg is located on a limestone cliff to the northeast . In the east it is bounded by the Steinhausertal, which flows into the Unterland near Salurn . Towards the south, the mountain gently merges over the 946 m high Saúch-Sattel into the less prominent mountain range that separates the Adige Valley from the Cembra Valley .
The border between South Tyrol and Trentino runs roughly in a west-east direction exactly over the highest point of the vulture. The South Tyrolean half, which belongs to the municipality of Salurn and is accessible by forest roads, is located in the Trudner Horn Nature Park , the Trentino side is mostly in the municipality of Giovo .
Surname
The mountain appears as Geyer B. in the Atlas Tyrolensis published in 1774 . It probably owes its name - as is often the case with mountains of the same name - to the fact that there were nests of birds of prey on its rocky flanks.
